Introduction

Light. The Earth is bathed in Light daily. Thus: Vision is equipped to utilize Light as Life strives for survival. If there is no Light: Then the Earth is frozen. So Light is also a Source of Heat. A third product of Light is : Food. Light feeds plants. Plants feed the rest of Life. Much of Life eats the other. In this way all Life is made of and from: Light.

But lastly and seemingly and surprisingly most importantly: Light is also: Photon. And the photon is a boson. It accounts for all movement on at a visual scale. Yes: This is surprising. We see no Light in every movement. Yet it is at the scene of every proton and electron interaction. Light – photons – are the Source of all: Force. For all movement. Light thus is literally in every object and movement. So Light is like God.

But – well, Again: There is one last surprise. Light – in the end is not – most important. The strange thing is: Gravity is the Source of Consciousness. And the Source of all Consciousness resides in your Brain. Every Hydrogen atom possesses a tiny Black Hole. It is this tiny Black Hole that rules the Cosmos. Photons provide the Power to do things. But behind all movement is Mind – is Consciousness.

Gravity rules the universe. Energy is concentrated in tiny Black Holes. Concentrated Energy is Consciousness. The universe is like one large Brain. There is Fate and Destiny influencing your Life – every day.

How Light is Made

What intrigues us is that Hydrogen seems to be involved with the generation of Light in stars. But it also seems to possess a Black Hole which absorbs all Light. The reason for this is: Hydrogen formed around countless tiny Black Holes in the first microseconds of the Big Bang. So this Black Hole thing is a relic of ancient ancient history. The generation of Light on the other hand is happening now – every day. Amazingly both are carried on – all at once.

In a star: The mathematics is relentless, and the concepts, though starting with basic chemistry, quicky expand into calculus, quantum mechanics and wave functions. The sun is an atomic furnace fusing Hydrogen into Helium releasing Light as a byproduct. So Light is an incidental part of what a star does? No. Light is photons. Photons are bosons. They provide the Force that makes the impact of Hydrogen nuclei upon the world around them – possible. Photons are involved in every interaction and reaction that Hydrogen atoms and ions are involved in.

So – in a star: Preheat the oven to twenty million degrees Kelvin. Take two nuclei of Hydrogen, each consisting of a single proton. Mold with the pressure found only at the core of a star. Let the temperature and pressure overcome the protons’ mutual repulsion forcing them to collide. There doesn’t seem to be a Strong Force anywhere around. Well, there is only one proton in most of the nuclei. Let protons then fuse into deuterons – heavy Hydrogen – there is the Strong Force at this step – releasing a neutrino plus one electron and its quantum-based opposite, a positron. Electron and positron soon collide, destroying each other and emitting a single photon – Light,. But the photon is just the beginning. To keep the reaction going, add carbon, whose catalytic properties enable the formation of Helium. On through reaction after reaction, let protons, positrons, and electrons smash, releasing more photons, fusing into more complex nuclei. Serve by sending photons to Earth – each second the sun converts four million tons of mass into pure Energy. The photons made in the process can spend up to a million years ricocheting through the furnace, a journey scientists call a ‘random walk.’ Once reaching the sun’s surface, photons zip to Earth in just over eight minutes.

Einstein and Idea Experiments

All his life – Einstein performed Idea experiments. Light and Einstein. Einstein was interested in more than Light – of course. He made significant breakthroughs. He also paraded forth a lot of nonsense. Most of this nonsense was related to Light. His most famous declarations concerning Light – and the Time and Space Light traverses – seem to have been simply conjured from air. What would the world look like – if he could ride on a beam of Light? If a person could run after a Light wave with the same speed as Light – you would have a wave arrangement which would be completely independent of Time.

We say: Time would stop. There would be no movement. There would only be an I – without memory. No recollection of any movement at all. It is impossible to cogently address these problems without the concept of Consciousness. Only things that move at the Cosmic speed limit – well, we have that backwards – only things without mass can move at the Cosmic speed limit – which just happens to be also the – speed of Light. So does this mean that electrons do not really move at that speed? Yes – they must move a tiny bit slower. When one moves at that speed – Time stops. Is there any empirical verification of this? Just from an existential philosophical viewpoint: A particle without Time – is a particle without memory – if there is no memory there is no memory of things past – there is simply – no movement. All movement stops when a particle reaches the Cosmic speed lmit. So Time does stop – but only in this existential, philosophical sense.

So Einstein knew that such a thing was impossible yet he would spend the next decade pondering the ride. Viewed from a beam of Light, clocks would seem frozen, the Light from their moving hands never reaching the retreating passenger. And yet, like someone in a slow elevator, Light’s rider would barely know he was moving. All the staid laws of Newton’s universe would be upset. Upset by the crazy illusions of a person who has never taken a basic philosophy class. What does a person learn in any basic philosophy class – about Space and Time?

Space and Time

Einstein’s Nobel prize for the photoelectric effect was earned -. although the work by Ersnt Mach had done most of the work already. The rest that he is famous for: Seems to be more products of hubris than accomplishment.

There are many problems with Space-Time. Well, first of all: Coordinates belong on a sheet of paper. They are not real things. All of this comes from philosophy which these people are just too busy to read. So you try to place four dimensions on a piece of paper. We notice that physicists are having problems reconciling Einstein’s ideas with the rest of the Standard Model. Well – see here!?: Here is the first sign of problem right here. You can’t place four dimensions on one piece of paper. Space is static – it is one place in time. It is like a painting. Dead. It is simply: Now. Time is a sequence of times. All of this cannot be on one sheet of paper. There is one other obvious problem which they are not even aware of: There is a fifth dimension!!!!!! Every determinantal formula such as F = ma – possesses five dimensions. In these cases the = sign is really a transformation sign. Think of a nuclear explosion.

So the fifth dimension: What do we do with that? These people are hopelessly lost in their mathematics. Our job is to provide the Entire Right Side of the Brain!

Space has another problem: It isn’t real. As we say it exists only on a piece of paper. It is used to describe characteristics of objects in the room around one. It is used to measure objects. Such that mathematical operations may be conducted. It is like drawing a picture of an object. The picture can useful but it is not the object being depicted. Space is a Cartesean area on a paper that is used to depict a figure that is analogous to a real object in such a manner that mathematical operations may be conducted and valid conclusions drawn without using the object itself. The relationship between the drawing and that which is depicted is an idea. The drawing is an analogy – It is not a real thing. So when one says that Space compresses – one misspeaks. Things may happen to an object which may be represented on the piece of paper. But making changes to the drawing does not immediately impact the object being depicted.

Then there is Time. So one reads: Time stops. What the …!!! Now a philosopher understands that Time does one thing – it measures the movement of things. Time cannot stop – it cannot go forwards or backwards. There is Consciousness. Consciousness can perceive, think and act and act with memory. Consciousness only perceives the present. The present is the only Time that exists. We have memory. We have recollection of past events. From this recollection we can do a lot of stuff. We know what objects are on the basis of their similarity with other things we have seen in the past. All of this is: A product of memory.

We know causation. We know of the relationships among these objects that we recognize: Based on the similarities in the sequence of movements among them. From all of this we are able to take memory and project into possible futures. All of this – except the Present – is artificial – it is all – simply – Memory. So: Space exists only if we can recognize objects. Time does not exist at all. It is an illusion created by memory. The ether of Space and Time that Einstein has created – simply does not exist as a real thing. It never travels beyond the world of the idea. Physicists make these mistakes for two reasons. They have not read philosophy. And: They are left hemispheric dominant in their Brain. One simply cannot deduce what we are saying. One requires 12 additional disciplines to say anything like we just said. This requires induction – not deduction. It simply requires a different half of the Brain. A half that is not allowed into the halls of a university.

And then Einstein said: A particle goes faster and faster until it becomes Energy – and then Time stops. Whoa! Let us review what we just said: We have 12 disciplines to work with. From philosophy we know that there is Consciousness – and this can perceive, think, and act – and think with memory. If one possesses pure Consciousness – without any memory – well. without memory: As we said – one is living only in an eternal Present. There are no objects. There are things – but nothing you have seen before – so no knowledge – – you cannot identify anything – there are no names for things. There is also: No movement. One only lives in a present without a past to compare what one sees right now with.. So: No movement. And if there is no movement – there is no Time. Time’s only function is to measure movement

So- it happened!: well, we were reading – and an author was talking about neutrinos and how as they zip through space they change identify from an electron-neutrino to a muon- neutrino – to a tau-neutrino – and/but sometimes Time is reversed! What he means is: The sequence of neutrino appearance is reversed – not Time! Physicists need to learn from philosophers and be very exact in their use of words – such as the words – Space and Time. One can’t just use words like that to impress people. They have very strict meanings.! Time never never never moves backwards!I It only exists because of Consciousness which possesses memory. What does exist is the Present. All else is related to memory. There is only the: Fond remembrance of past events – or the projection forward of such memories – into the unknown – from that known past. If there is no memory: There is only a Present and no more. The Present is the only thing: That exists.

Consequently: Memory works in a very specific manner. You can only remember things that have happened. You cannot remember things that might happen in the Future. Such sloppiness in thinking leads to wastes of Time – and money. We need new Sources of Energy.

OK – now this speed of Light thing: One must be thinking particles – quanta of Light – when one measures the speed of Light. One must know where these separate quanta are at different times and not look at clocks when one says time is speeding up or slowing down – one looks at the Earth. Is it speeding up and slowing down? The answer is: The Earth never varies its motion – so Time does not change either. Time is always a comparison of something we know like the rotation of the Earth – and we compare that – with some other motion – such as a person running.. But this minibook we are writing – is about other problems that exist in physicists’ thought

There seems to be a problem with identifying one quantum of Light. Light seems to be one continuous wave. Except when it hits something. Then: Spat!! Obviously this continuous flow of Light must have varying amounts of concentration within it. We believe that particles possess heavier concentrations of Energy. This translates into greater concentrations of Consciousness. These concentrations contrast with the thin fields of energy attached to them. In the case of Light – these attached fields are rolled up right next to the flow of quanta. The quanta are in a flow – but there must be small interstices of space between them: Spaces that speed of light machines are not picking up. Which leads one to the following sort of quandary: How could Light travel at the same speed regardless of its direction or source? Such a constant speed defies common sense. Such a speed defies Laws of Nature! So Einstein proposed his solution to the paradox: Time must be mutable. The constant speed of Light made Time ‘relative.’ If Light is a constant then Time cannot be. Time as perceived by a stationary observer ticks more slowly for moving bodies. Two planes with clocks circle opposite the Earth in different directions and compare with a stationary clock. There are three clocks: One on each plane and one on the ground. The clocks duplicate the Time the Earth takes to rotate on its axes. When the planes circle and then land – all three clocks should all be the same. Because the rotation of the Earth has not changed in any way.!!!! The problem is that the Earth has moved during the time the planes were circling. Time is always related to some motion that is fixed and cannot be changed to compare another motion with. Time is always constant because the Earth always turns the same – even when clocks may change for some reason. All of this is basic philosophy. It just appears that people stop thinking when things they are studying become too small or go too fast. Induction is required to find Truth. Equations no longer work well. One needs input experience from 12 other disciplines. When one creates a synthesis – a hypothesis – one can never reach certainty but can approach a high level of probability of things being True.

Relativity

Well, Professor Matt Strassler in his book about ‘Waves in an Impossible Sea’ – goes on and on about relativity and how it has been an issue since the Ancient Greeks. So: We guess he goes through all this because he is perplexed that people are giving Einstein such a hard time for his ideas concerning the topic. The fact is: Einstein simply was not given the Noble Prize for his ideas concerning relativity – this is a fact – and we think this omission was worthy! He certainly seems confused at times. We have gone into these confused ideas in detail elsewhere. OK for example – we shall just state this and move on: When it comes to the speed of Light and clocks and all that – Einstein is plain wrong. And this book on Cosmic Oceans is driving its own nails into that coffin by its emphasis upon ‘waves’ – which shows us that physicists don’t really think about particles at all – just fields.

Einstein – Gravity – Space Time. This whole question of Space-Time. We are beginning to think that most of this conundrum is a semantics thing. Einstein saw the need for something – so: He simply invented it! Physicists are looking for an aether – well, sound is related to air – waves in the ocean are related to water – perhaps Space-Time is merely a substitute in language for the ‘aether’ all physicists are looking for. Waves of Light seem to be moving very quickly in no known substance.

The Cosmic speed limit: ‘c’. Well the speed of light is one example of this. It turns out that other phenomena also travel at this speed and of course less. But we have to agree that this ‘speed limit’ is an empirical thing. It is not something that has been deduced to be True. Tomorrow we may just simply discover something that travels faster. It appears that if a particle possesses a rest mass of zero – it will travel at the Cosmic speed limit. Can anything move faster? There is no intrinsic reason for this speed to be the fastest.

Photons have zero rest mass, and the fact that they travel at the speed of ‘c’ confirms this. But they have nonzero gravitational mass, which is why they are affected by Gravity. So Light is not bent by a Space-Time warping but by the effect – the impact – of bodies interacting with Gravity.

General relativity: There is the equivalence principle – that acceleration in one frame is indistinguishable from gravity in another frame. If one is on a merry-go-round – the centrifugal force one feels is equivalent to what being pulled about by Gravity would feel like. So Space-Time becomes warped because an object with mass warps the Space-Time around it – so one thinks he or she is experiencing Gravity – but he or she is merely falling into a hole created by a curve in Space-Time.

There is an alternative explanation which would make a lot more sense and be compatible with Cosmic Law: There is a Source of Gravity like tiny Black Holes in every Hydrogen atom which aggregated can exert pull upon objects. On Earth Hydrogen exists only two places: In water – that is the oceans – and in Life – which was created in oceans.

Such an explanation would yield particles, fields, and Forces which would be compatible with the Standard Model and would lead directly to a Theory of Everything.

So – what happened? How could a person as intelligent as Einstein come up with such crazy hypotheses?

Well, let us take a small detour and consider the Cosmic I.

So: Suppose Einstein’s idiocy is somehow connected with the fact that he noticed his Cosmic I.. What we are referring to is: When we were infants our mother worked with us until we had developed a Social I – so we could fit in with people, not become obnoxious – and not have a brutal short life. We soon forget what we knew from the beginning – the fact that: I am ‘looking out’. I am the center of the World – No! The Universe!!

It is time for Consciousness to make its appearance in science. There simply will be no more major breakthroughs until we accept the fact of its existence. So Einstein suddenly became aware of his Cosmic I – and soon was toying with the idea that if one did not have memory – Time and Space would change. Time would disappear. Space would be an assortment of completely new things every second. Light which moves at the fastest speed ever seen on earth – would just look the same when all movement stops. Space and Time would not exist in ways that it had existed before. Time and Space actually would become clay that he could mold to his own wishes. This ‘warping’ of his perception of the World – would somehow release Gravity. Suddenly: Einstein was in a weird place. With no Time – with no meaning. And this bizarre world that he created caused him to think all of this through. Somehow when particles go too fast – they stop being particles and become pure Energy. Left and right hand muons begin to flash back and forth – although their spins remain the same. Einstein is in this Consciousness Land without memory. And all sorts of things come to his mind.

It is time to welcome Consciousness into the room. And begin to think about Everything – again! Nietzsche and Kierkegaard have warned us of the hubris and craziness an encounter with our Cosmic I can bring.

Light and Consciousness

So: Is Light Spiritual? Is God Light? We think not. Light is photons. Among bosons – photons are some of the weaker ones. God is Consciousness. All Energy is Consciousness. The more compact and concentrated Energy is – the more Powerful is its Consciousness. The god particle is not the Higgs boson. More likely the god particle – is the proton. This is because the proton possesses something that most physicists will never even look for. Every proton possesses a tiny Black Hole.

Within microseconds of the Big Bang – the universe was filled with countless tiny Black Holes – which subsequently disappeared. There were arguably as many tiny Black Holes as there are Hydrogen atoms today. It is quite possible that Hydrogen atoms in the universe formed around these tiny Black Holes.

You are ‘looking out’ from the center of one of these tiny Black Holes. But deduction does not take one to that knowledge. Only induction – the right side of the Brain is able to make that discovery. Knowledge of this Black Hole comes only from synthesis. It comes mostly from the discipline of Philosophy

You are ‘looking out’ from the center of one of these tiny Black Holes. You in this way – have personal detailed knowledge – as to what it is like to ‘look out’ from the center of an atom. What it is like to ‘look out’ from the center – of a tiny Black Hole! Well from the center of a Black Hole – in general!

Because it is eternal, there is no end to Light. Photons, unlike other subatomic particles, have no mass and therefore do not decay. Whether begat by God or an indifferent Cosmos, the first photons of creation are still out there – somewhere. Which leads to questions: So the universe is slowly losing Energy? Light will travel outwards forever? What is Light doing in this instance – exactly. Light has so much work to do in each atom every day. Then it is sent outwards forever – towards what – for what reason? To communicate with other particles?

Well, in principle – deduction requires empirical knowledge from experiment. And every person has personal knowledge concerning the Black Hole that resides in his or her Brain. However there are two problems with this Source of knowledge. As we say: First our mothers have diverted our attention. We were born with a Cosmic I, that is ‘looking out’. But our mothers very quickly have created in us – Social I. She has given us an I that allows one to live a normal Life among other human Beings. Nietzsche and Kierkegaard have warned us of the dangers of the Cosmic I. If an exceptionally intelligent person should notice his or her Cosmic I – he could either go insane – or suddenly observe that he or she may be possibly a god him- or herself.

The fact is: There is a miracle here. There is real Magic. In fact the Cosmic I is Theee real source of all real Magic. Somehow primitive people were more aware of fundamental Truths regarding humanity than physicists are today. For the fact is: Every person on Earth – is ‘looking out’. Every person on Earth is – the center of the universe. Indeed – this is – Magic!!! So we haven’t noticed such a thing primarily because of our mother.

Also very seldom has the university with its 12 disciplines noticed the Cosmic I. Philosophy has. Biology when it is considering the ramifications of Darwin’s evolution may broach the topic of Consciousness. But in general such talk concerning the I is almost illegal it would seem. It is just not allowed – in polite company. Yet it is apparent now that the topic of Consciousness is almost an essential topic for discussion in all the disciplines – if progress is to be made in intellectual and scientific thought generally. Indeed – If humanity is to be able – to survive!

Conclusion

So: Einstein has said some pretty outlandish things. And there has been little one could do about it. Afterall – this is physics we are talking about. Engineers-to-be have to take physics . But they are Engineering majors so they are protected if they receive ‘C’s in physics and chemistry classes. If one desires to be a physics major – one learns very quickly one needs to be a wizard in/with mathematics. Because that is what physics has evolved to be: Primarily pages and pages of mathematics. When it comes to creative work – physics like the rest of the university curriculum reserves professorships for those who are dominant in the left side of their Brain.

Light is God’s reflection? God’s divine messenger? Quantum theory works on paper, yet still it is incomplete. Wielding ‘c’ like a wand, Einstein had toppled Newton, quantized physics, and destroyed the constancy of mass, energy, space, time.

Light always moves at 186,000 miles per second. Light possesses no mass. Thus it has no ‘rest mass’. Light always moves at ‘c’ regardless of the motion of the perceiver. This is because a photon cannot be stopped and its position compared with other things. So the fact that Light is always the same is really meaningless. You can’t use it for anything important. But they say that GPS cannot be done correctly without this fact. I think it is like all things quantum mechanics – all of it is True until it isn’t. Smart phones are made more powerful because components are made smaller and smaller – until they can’t be made any smaller. Then don’t worry – we have quantum mechanics all in equations. But one glance tells you: They don’t even know what a particle or wave is or what they do. They have in the past simply told us: just Trust us. We’ll have all the equations when we need them. Until that day comes – and Nada!

There is a reason Einstein did not receive a Nobel Prize for relativity. This was because important people simply felt that his ideas were wrong. But everyone accepted what he was saying as being True. Why not? What difference does any of it mean anyway. Everything is too small too fast – we’ll just say what he says if True – what harm is there in doing that?

The World is at a crossroards right now! There are only days of oil left. Two-thirds of the world is underdeveloped. Population is exploding. Automobiles have ruined the Earth. We have run out of Time. We must run fast now merely to salvage what little we have left.

It is Time for both sides of the Brain – to be identified, developed, and taught to work together. Things have gotten – very very serious!

After a long wait – here is the overture to Faust 2024. It is in 12- tone scale harmonics. We have been working on this for 60 years. There have been 45 breakthroughs in just the last three years. Major breakthroughs have come from taking music theory – that is, the Circle of 5ths – and placing Goethe’s Circle of Colors on top. This has culminated in Gold being found at the bottom of both circles. And then that discovery has led to Gold all around both Circles as we take opposite triads like: F and sharp – B and B flat – E and E flat – A and A flat – D and D flat – B and B flat – and Magic occurs! The curtain rises – as the Overture is being played. Faust is up stage left – in total darkness save for a lamp at his desk where he is seated facing the left wall. As the music plays – a dancer appears up stage right – in a spot light. She is Faust’s mind. He is alone in the night. His country is at a crossroads – as Germany was 300 yeas before. There are only 30 years of oil left. There is population explosion. The world needs breakthroughs in science. Desperate times – call for desperate measures. Introduction

For several years after 1968, Herbert Marcuse was supposedly one of the two most famous philosophers in the world – the other was Jean-Paul Sartre. The authors of this minibook – well, frankly – had never heard of him. His fame seems to have been due to two books he wrote while living in the United States, during the 1960s and 1970s: Eros and Civilization and One-Dimensional Man. These two books according to Andrew Feenberg – the author of a book we have been reading (which is cited at the end of this book) – allegedly represented the ‘utopian aspirations and dystopian fears of the time.’ Feenberg feels: Together, ‘these two books offer an original critique of advanced capitalism focusing on the social construction of subjectivity and technology.’ Well, the 1960s and 1970s in the U.S. – of course: Were famous for the ‘flower children’ that paraded about in various stages of undress and in various states of consciousness due to drugs – well, supposedly these young people also found time if they indeed can remember doing anything – of significance – during that time – well, they seemed to Feenbeerg – to have been seeking a philosophical basis for their ‘revolution’ – and supposedly found such a thing – in the writings of Marcuse. Well, one of the authors of this minibook was – there – then – and we don’t think Feenberg is correct: No one mentioned Marcuse in the pot parties we were a part of. Supposedly Marcuse was so closely identified with the New Left that after its decline – his theoretical contribution seems to have been overlooked – if indeed anyone every really seriously considered his ideas in a popular context. Today, according to Feenberg – the contributions of Marcuse must be considered to be ‘more relevant than ever’. In particular, Feenberg points to Marcuse’s ideas concerning something called: ‘Instrumental reason.’ We guess such a subject was related to: Marxist ideas concerning technology – that is, Tools.

Marcuse’s philosophy as well as Feenberg’s book are important here – only because they give us admirable, succinct looks at the works of Hegel, Heidegger, Marx, and Freud. As one reads of the essence of each of these philosopher’s thought – as they might relate to the ideas of a supposed ‘Hippie’ culture – one is struck by the fact that – each of these philosopher’s ideas can be seen to be part of One overall philosophy – one that possesses the Power to include much of traditional philosophical thought in its construction. Of course, we have studied all of the philosophies addressed in Feenberg’s book – in depth on our own. In fact we have several minibooks addressed to the central precepts of each of these men – books that are available on this site. We maintain that our philosophy addresses and elucidates the salient aspects of these philosophies to the extent that we might assert that our new, original philosophy might be extended: It might well stand in for most of much of all philosophy in general. This amazing assertion is because we can see that all philosophy simply devolves into one discipline: Biology – specifically as that field of study pertains to the examination of the human brain – well, actually any center of cognition in any form of animal life – that is examining a brain – from the ‘inside out’. When this is understood: A major question emerges: Does philosophy still stand as a separate discipline any more? Or does it immediately become an adjunct – albeit an important one – subordinant to the field of biology? That is: Are we acknowledging the Death – of philosophy? That is: Should we not acknowledge the death of a dialog among thoughtful scholars concerning abstract considerations of the workings of a human mind – which now can be replaced by serious focus upon biological workings of brains in general – which are no longer subjects of thought – provoking repartee but now are focused on empirical examination of biological functioning. In this new proposed ‘sub-discipline’ of biology: Well, there are problems – empirical work is hampered by instruments that are unable to examine things that are too small or moving moving too fast. However, such deficiencies may now be supplemented by work that is informed by the realization that every biological entity possesses an I which is control of its physical activity. Every animal has a hydrogen ion in its command: This I is the recipient of empirical knowledge concerning the operation of the cognitive organ that it is a part of. Only a human being is able to take this information, understand that an I exists and that it is ‘looking out’, and is able via language to report what are truly legitimate empirical findings to the scientific world. This knowledge gives information that is valuable for every discipline in the curriculum of the University. In particular: this new augmented field of Biology – with its inadequate instruments will benefit from such intimate, empirical knowledge. Even a field such as physics can benefit from such studies – when one realizes that he or she is viewing the world – from the center of a hydrogen ion! – actually from the center – of a Black Hole!

Once we realize that traditional philosophy is really gone – we must next decide what topics philosophers should actually be considering – what they should begin to focus on. At the time that Marcuse lived and worked in the United States – a form of philosophy called ‘postmodernism ‘ actually was taking the discipline into what we feel were new constructive areas of thought. For example: There was one strain of thinking – that was focused upon materialism in modern powerful economies and the eroding effects such focus upon consumption of commodities can have upon intellectual and moral attainment. At the same time, we acknowledge: There was also a tendency for such thinkers to address problems of language – these studies were related more to the playing with words and the reaching for easy conclusions that seemed to be related to a philosopher’s hemispheric dominance in the brain. As we shall see here in this minibook: This second part of a recent philosophy – was a symptom of a discipline – which has simply – lost its way.

The I and

Hemispheric Dominance in the Human Brain

One of the authors possesses an I.Q. of 230 – which seems strange since it is universally understood that I.Q tests do not yield scores higher than 200. Well, most I.Q. tests are designed to measure the abilities of the left side of the brain.. The abilities of the left side of the brain are analytical and deductive in nature – and these abilities are able to be evaluated using written questions – 200 questions are given and if all are correct, then one receives a 200 I. Q.

There is only one I.Q. test for the right side of the brain: The Wechsler-Bellevue Block Test – which is a performance test. One is given blocks with patterns on them and given a pattern on a piece of paper to be duplicated with the patterns on the blocks – if one is able to do this in say 4 minutes which is impossible but which would be able to be processed by means of the tests’ calculuses – then the I.Q, would be like 400. Well, what we mean is: 200 is not the upper limit when it comes to a score that can be received on this test. When this author received this score he was told that the test had been used for quite a while and two notable people that had been given high scores were Hegel with 160 I.Q. and Goethe with 170.

This author thus has an unique perspective when it comes to reading philosophy. When he reads a philosophy by Hegel he reads not just the words but he also can see patterns of thought being referred to in the words – that mirror biological processes which exist in his own brain. This author knows how his brain works – so when Hegel talks about an abstract concept such as the ‘Absolute’ – this author understands that this is a word that is ‘standing in’ – for an ability that his own brain possesses. With these ideas in mind – let us look at the philosophers that both Marcuse and Feenberg placed great emphasis upon. In this examination we shall place our greatest emphasis upon: George Freidrich Hegel. He was a man capable of great Synthesis. It is he that alerted the authors of this minibook to the fact: When one considers traditional philosophy – he or she is simultaneously and necessarily looking at words – that we maintain are related – to the physiology of the human brain.

A note need be added at this point: One author here possesses an extremely high I.Q. – but there is no danger of hubris. For almost all of his life he has been disparaged, discounted, considered unworthy of participation in intellectual discussion. This experience will never – be forgotten – or discounted. This author realizes what every person on earth – ultimately must accept: He, they, you – possess – only one side – of the brain. There is an entire world – that you have absolutely no conception of!

Hegel

So the philosophy of Hegel: Well, we have gone through this many times before. There was Descartes who said everything is clear and distinct. Then there was Berkeley who said everything is relative. Then there was Leibniz who said: Not only are things clear and distinct but they can be drawn up into precise most clear and most distinct categories called – monads. Then did Hume retort: Not only are things not clear and distinct – but instead nothing can be known for certain – ever!

Well, Immanuel Kant suspected that something was up – with all this back and forth. Perhaps there were simply two types of minds – two different sets of abilities that human minds have: Different abilities, different faculties – which when combined have the potential to result in a product that is essential to intellectual thought. So he attempted the obvious: He decided to attempt to create a synthesis of all of these ideas – to see if in some manner this might make sense in terms of logical sequence. Well, his Critique of Pure Reason of course is famous – but unfortunately it is inadequate – as Kant attempted to create a synthesis using analytical – deductive means. In the end, Kant ended up with the categories of Space and Time – which truly are the most essential ideas that are related to all things. Nevertheless these categories remain just that: Analytical categories – with no content.

So this called forth responses: From Herr Hegel – for which he – is famous! This man attempted the Grand Synthesis of all thought by means of a synthetic, inductive approach. Unfortunately, a mind like that has problems with language: His explanation of things – is simply – not clear and distinct enough. So a proper conclusion to be made at the end – at that time – was: Nietzche and Kiekegaard were right – we would do best – if we just simply considered stopping all of this nonsense – and just consider – other things – like Will and Love.

Well, as we have said: We have gone through all of this before – but it just became apparent as we read this book by Feenberg about the work of Herbert Marcuse – well, as we worked our way through this most recent of considerations of all these various philosophers – Plato, Hegel, Heidegger, and Marx and even a person, like Freud – well, it becomes apparent: One size fits all! Hegel’s final synthesis when view properly – collapses into biology – and Philosophy simply – along with Nietzche’s God – is Dead!

So Herr Hegel: Simply put – Hegel said that Kant was correct in stating that there are different categories of thought and these do seem to work together. In the end: Yes – all of philosophy does seem to collapse into two Tools – Space and Time.

Hegel went on, however: Yes, the philosophies of people like Descartes and Leibniz all do seem to work together – but a whole bunch of thinkers – are left out! The mind does have an analytical, deductive ability – but for other thinkers – there is something else – that seems to be equal in importance: The synthetic, inductive ability. Space and Time as tools just will not suffice as concepts of ‘ultimate; or ‘Absolute’ sort of tools. As we say: What is missing is the entire content – of intellectual thought. Form of thought. Content of thought. Put them together: And Wahlaah! Magic! Well, the I is Magic. There seems to be Magic – everywhere! For example: The I is Consciousness. We simply do not know what: Consciousness is. It is simply: Magic.

More about this I – sort of Magic – later. But human beings have found one more Source: Of Magic! Well, as we say: This is what Hegel is really all about! Let us recollect – anthropologically – biologically – the human being is: The ape – who creates – Tools. Yes, man and woman apes took things – like a tree limb and killed things with it – and later maybe even swept the cave. For the first time in evolutionary history this was not the result of molecules embedded within DNA in each human cell – for the first time in history – this was not the result of instinct – but instead this was the result of a Miracle: An animal mind somehow was observing things in its own way – processed them in its own way – and as the result of certain Powers in its brain – this animal had come up with something that the Earth had never seen before: There was Magic! There was: An idea!

Hegel traces in detail – a little too much detail for some peoples’ tastes – as to how exactly – it is – that objects become ideas. It turns out that there is a thing called the ‘mind’. Well, we shall jump ahead here: We shall simply introduce our philosophy – right here. In every particle in the Cosmos there is an I . That is: There is Consciousness. All energy possesses Consciousness. Energy is bound together most densely into nodes: which at the time of the Big Bang were – hydrogen atoms – whose nuclei possessed Black Holes. Every living thing possesses hydrogen ions that are in charge of biological activities. In plants every cell has such an I. In animals there is one I that is in charge over all of these cellular I s – as well. As we say: Consciousness is Magic! We shall never know what it is. But we do know: What it does. TheI does three things: Perceives, Thinks, and Acts – with the aid of a memory. Thus our philosophy begins with a Cosmic entity – but this is also a biological entity – a hydrogen ion which is in charge of a human brain.

But there is more: There are two types of human brains: There are two hemispheres in the brain – each with different abilities. Each person has dominance in one side of the brain or the other. No person possesses both. Each hemisphere performs operations that are essential to creating a final product: That of a Tool. Both sides of the brain – that is, two people with different hemispheric dominance in their brains – must work together in order for intellectual thought to progress.

Hegel tells us how the two sides of the brain work together. First – there is Perception. Well, as we say: the hydrogen ion that is in charge of our brain – is a particle. And all particles possess a wave attached to them. These waves are conduits of information flowing between particles and objects – and other particles in the external world. There is always a wave between our I and objects in the external world. Thus, there are always patterns of information that always exist between our I and those objects. Right way: We are once removed – from objects external to us.

In addition for humans: There are biological organs which are instantly digesting and manipulating the beholding of objects external to us substantially – to begin with. For example there is no color ‘red’ out there – anywhere. There are no straight lines out there. So already we are part way towards a Tool – called an Idea.

After things are Perceived by organs in the brain – then humans take the second step: They Think! This step is aided by: Memories of objects that have been obtained before – and by the operations of two sides of the brain. Considerations regarding memory will appear below. However, at this point we shall examine carefully differences between the operations of the two sides of the brain. As we say: There are two sides of the brain in every person – each side with different abilities. Every person is dominant in one hemisphere or the other – never both. In the case of right hemispheric dominant people – information concerning objects in the external world are collected into bundles of perceptions. How do such people do this? They perform a biological act that only a human with dominance in the right side of his or her brain – is able to do. All new knowledge is initiated by people who are right hemispheric dominant. That is: the right side of the brain is able to detect: Similarity!

As Roger Sperry at Cal Tech discovered in his work with epileptics who had had their corpus callosums severed: The right side of the brain is able to discern innately and automatically – similarities in the characteristics among isolated objects – and then discern similarities in the patterns in which these objects move and interact with other. Recognition of such patterns naturally might lead to expectations concerning future moves among similar objects. In this way – the right side of the brain creates: Concepts. Things that look alike are given a name – which is related to a concept based on similarity among certain objects. Things may also move routinely in a certain sequence – this similarity is given a name related to a similarity called ‘cause and effect’ that exists often among these objects. All of these concepts are combined in the right hemisphere within what is called: A type of Grand Synthesis – which Hegel called – The Absolute. This Synthesis is a pattern among concepts that is generated automatically in the right side of the brain of a right hemispheric dominant person. These generalizations are all just globs of perceived similarity: There is no certainty to any of this.

Then other men and women – with different proclivities related to the left side of the brain: Well, they take those names for objects and movements and work with the concepts attached to them. They are able with their abilities: To discern central attributes that are always present when objects with certain names and interactions are observed. They realize that the first men and women have done a lot of work. But lots more can and must be done – to reap tremendous Power in the form of Tools. At this point: Humans with dominance in the left hemisphere of their brains are able to do an astonishing thing: They are able to Separate! In this process: One examines clusters within Grand Syntheses – which were created by someone else – to discern essential attributes that are possessed by each name. For clusters of objects that are similar – essential attributes of clusters are identified – they are called: Definitions. For clusters related to the Similarity among movements of objects – these essential attributes are called: – Determinants. Plato called both of these types of essential attributes: Forms. When one works through these two processes – these are two types of creation – performed by different people – that is: Perception – then Thought – with its Collection and Separation – well, when humans work through these two processes they end up with a Miracle: Together – they Create an ‘Idea’. And an Idea is: A Tool! Such a Tool is able to be used to impact the world around the humans! Humans thus are able to Perform a third process – along with Perception and Thought – the third process is: Action! Humans are able to impact the world around them – in ways that animals have never been able to do – before! And of course – what one notices right away is: Well, all of this is anthropological. All of this is: Biological!

Yes – if one looks closely – it is all right there – in his books: Hegel did indeed come up with all of this – but his inadequacy with articulation of words and concepts left a hopeless mass of words which end up having a metaphorical, blurred type of relationship to the Truth. However, if a reader happens to be right hemispheric dominant – he or she is able – to see things – that other people may fail to see.

Plato

Well, Hegel is sort of at the end of Philosophy. Plato is sort of – at the Source. How does Plato ever become – Biology? We mean: His whole message is primarily – ‘Reason operates with universal concepts that enable the ordering – of the infinite flux of experience – concerning objects in the external world – into a rational, coherent system – of understanding.’ He was always talking about abstract things – as we have seen above – called Forms. What do these ideas have to do with – a real world?

Actually, Plato’s words do relate to physical things. However, there is a confusing aspect to his notion of ‘universal’. Well, as we say: There are two sides of the brain. The right side is inductive, synthetic – which works on the basis of similarity and cause and effect. It creates a ‘universal’ – well, a Synthesis with links among perceptions of objects in the external world by means of the right hemisphere’s ability to spot similarities among objects and then spot similarities among the movements of these objects – well, patterns are observed that repeat – this is seen then that – which implies that movements might be related – but for the right side of the brain – there is never certainty.

Which brings us to Plato: We are interested in Plato for two reasons – first – he tells us about the left side of the brain – second – he also tells us about Cosmic things. That is, his philosophy not only talks about phenomena related to hemispheric dominance in the brain but also to phenomena related to the hydrogen ion that in charge of each human’s brain. The hydrogen ion brings certain attributes to the philosopher’s table – which every star possesses – which every particle possesses: Will, Love, Truth, Beauty, and Justice. These attributes are found in the electromagnetic waves that are attached to every particle. And since Plato was left hemispheric dominant, he necessarily spoke of phenomena related to left hemispheric thought – which possesses its own type – of universal – called: A ‘Form’. The left side of the brain is analytical, deductive – has a ‘spot’ memory concerning ideas related to objects in the external world – and it relates these ideas one to the other by means of equivalencies: Mathematical, deductive, logical relationships – which that side creates automatically.

In this way: Plato’s side of the brain has a peculiar understanding. On one hand, it understand that a peculiar kind of perfection in ideas exists. However, on the other hand, nothing in the external world seems to honor or possess such a perfection. Particulars, objects in the external world – just simply fall far short of the perfect realization of concepts that exist in the left side of the brain – concepts that are used by that side of the brain to order and render meaning unto – these objects. No drawing of a triangle is actually a triangle; no white object can be perfectly white. But as Marcuse pointed out – the opposite is also True: Concepts cannot be reduced to particulars. They contain what Marcuse calls a ‘transcending’ content that is available to the experiencing subject as a sense of incompleteness or imperfection. In the case of Life, and especially of society, that content takes the form of potentialities awaiting realization. These potentialities are real, not simply as theoretical projections but in a strong sense that implies an ontology to which Marcuse repeatedly referred to but never fully elaborated.

Marcuse believed: Consciousness of social potentialities must be attributed to the imagination because it alone has the power to project beyond the given toward an ideal form. This is wrong: as we shall see – the left side of the brain conceives of ‘forms’ of thought – such as syllogisms and mathematics. These forms are somehow intrinsically embedded within the neural fabric of left hemispheric analytical thought processes. They probably have no relationship to any type of so-called potentialities in the world external to a philosopher. When it comes to imagination – we shall consider this subject under the heading of ‘Freud’.

Thus everything in Plato’s philosophy is related to the physiology of the brain. His forms and strategies of deductive thinking were related to dominance in the left hemisphere of his brain. And the Cosmic attributes of Will, Love, Truth, Beauty, and Justice are attributes that are carried about by every atom that exists in the Cosmos. There happens to be such one such particle – a hydrogen ion – that is in charge of each person’s brain – carrying these Cosmic attributes with it. In this way every aspect of Plato’s philosophy is related to the physiology of the human brain.

Heidegger

Marcuse’s early Marxist work was written under the influence of Heideggerian phenomenology. Important aspects of Heidegger’s phenomenology is the distinction between the lived world of everyday experience and the empirical facts studied by natural science. Marcuse’s main purpose seemed to be to provide an account of subjectivity that was lacking in the Marxist tradition. We believe: Heidegger’s main concern – without his realizing it was – The I.

Heidegger’s main idea was: ‘Dasein’. That is: For the human brain there is no such thing as an object in the external world – none, that is, that exists for a human – in a plain, unadulturated way. The I simply processes – digests, as it were – every object that is perceives. It is our belief: An I is able to work with – only concepts. Again – let us explain this in our way: An I is a hydrogen ion – it is a Cosmic entity. As we say: The Cosmos is composed of only – Energy. All energy possesses Consciousness. In the first billionths of a second – at the time of the Big Bang – some of this energy was concentrated into nodes around tiny Black Holes – these nodes have been called: ‘Atoms.’ 99.3 percent of all atoms at the present time are hydrogen atoms or helium atoms – the latter are made from hydrogen atoms fused together. The remaining .07 percent of atoms have been made later in stars – this creation done – by hydrogen ions. In this way: Everything in the Cosmos – has been created by – hydrogen ions. Both hydrogen and helium atoms possess Black Holes. They possess a tremendous amount of energy – and therefore a tremendous amount of Consciousness. Helium atoms have two Black Holes revolving around each other. The Consciousness of a helium atom is unable to be expressed. A helium ion is simply unable to impact the world around it. Thus only hydrogen ions are able to do anything of any consequence – well, compared to what any other atomic ion can do. An atom must be an ion – that is, it must be bereft of electrons to have an impact on the world around it. The rest of the atoms do not possess Black Holes. They are like slaves with hydrogen ions in charge – encoded memories are given to them by hydrogen ions – which guide all of their interactions with other particles.

Every human brain has a hydrogen ion in charge. Every particle in the Cosmos has a wave attached to it. The wave is used by a particle to communicate with the world around it. Thus all reality – all Perception of objects in the Cosmos – is mediated by – is conducted by means of – patterns of information that are moved by means of waves. Thus in the Cosmos there is no direct information conveyed concerning the attributes of one particle to another. In this way: Heidegger’s phenomenology presents a physical fact – it denies the assertion of the scientist – that his or her science – explains ultimate reality. The fact is: All human thought is – I. An object is always in a place – somewhere away – from Consciousness. Consciousness is always physically separated from reality. Our notion of reality is always contaminated by: The I . Using Heidegger’s terminology: As far as the I is concerned – all reality is ‘Dasein’.

In the early twentieth century, in a context of rapid scientific and technological advance – well, in a world of Industrial Revolution: Naturalism – that is, a false belief in the ability of the scientist to work intimately with objects – ‘as they really and actually are’ – was on the rise. Much mainstream liberal thought accepted it. As we say – in the face of Industrial Revolution: Now – only ‘facts’ were considered real, and philosophy seemed to have no facts of its own to study. Familiar philosophical categories such as: ‘Essence,’ ‘ideal forms,’ ‘substance,’ ‘monads,’ and the Cartesian cognito – lost their footing in the objective world.

Neo-Kantian philosophy had a concept of object construction: This philosophy believed in a certain conceptual schema – namely – ‘The category – creates the object!’ Such a statement seems at first glance to be absurd. But then let us reconsider: If the I possesses its own Truth of things – as is mandated by the particle with its wave – well, then Categories are all – the left side of the brain truly has. For the left side of the brain – all that it possesses – are categories – which in turn are based upon the Perception of objects – which we have seen – is necessarily incomplete. Thus a object in the external world examined by a left hemispheric dominant scientist is therefore – not a ‘thing-in-itself’ – but instead is – a ‘reference structure’ based on intuition and constituted by categories: It is a Truth constructed by an hydrogen ion from translation of information brought to it – by its wave.

As Hegel understood: All of this idealist – all of this conceptual confusion – collapses into ‘mind’. All Truth for him is: Mind. So he has been called an idealist. The mind creates everything – even the Truth. But we who are right hemispheric dominant in the brain – when we read Hegel – we simply dig deeper: Well, as we say – Hegel’s words have special meaning to us. We realize: When Hegel is talking about ‘Mind’ – he is touching – his head! We have information that both Hegel and Heidegger did not have. We realize instantly that we are not talking about abstract things here! Suddenly many things became clear to us – the very word ‘meaning’ must implicate a subject – an I – a real thing – a physical thing – that is able to recognize such a word.

Let stop for a moment – and look at the topic of memory in more detail right here. As we say: There is an I – with its Synthesis – a Grand sort of Synthesis that automatically exists in and is utilized by every right hemispheric dominant person – or such Synthesis is given to one – in which case a person – who is left hemispheric dominant – merely adopts what is given – since such a person is unable to create such a Synthesis on his or her own. As we say: A deductive mind has a ‘spot memory’ which absorbs much information that is previously worked up by other people. This deductive brain is able to able to utilize such ‘spot’ memories as he or she possesses a natural ability to deduce – use mathematics and logic to work with such ‘spot facts’.

The right side of the brain is able to memorize only by means of relationships between objects that are perceived and a Synthesis that already exists in one brain. The right side of the brain learns: Only by means of Connection. Children who are right hemispheric dominance in the brain have much difficulty memorizing facts in what is called a ‘routinized’ manner – as they have little in the Syntheses in their brains to relate new material to. Thus: Even in the process of memorizing facts – both sides of the brain truly benefit from working together.

Hegel spelled out a process that a right hemispheric person uses routinely in his or her brain – without a left hemispheric person even being aware of it. This is what Hegel termed: The Dialectic. This is simply how memory and hypothesis creation works within the right side of the brain. A mother first helps a right brained person start a memory by starting the creation of a Synthesis in his or her brain. From then on – all new information is taken by means of Perception and connection of concepts with this Synthesis. If a new concept can be related to the Synthesis in one’s brain – then it is either redundant and thus discarded – or it is added to adjust concepts concerning objects or concerning the movements among objects – adjusting cause and effects relationships among concepts in one’s brain. When new perceptions clash with concepts in one’s Synthesis – this can be exciting. This can be the cause for new Breakthroughs! This actually is the only source for new knowledge! Even results from experimentation cannot be processed adequately and proper generalizations made – without the aid of the right side of the brain. Witness: The work of Faraday.

In the Dialectic: When a new concept is presented to be considered in the face of the Synthesis that exists in one’s brain – this new concept is called a Thesis – the Synthesis that exists in the person’s brain at that moment is called an Antithesis. (Confusing! – thanks, Hegel.) So the new information is either integrated into the existing Synthesis within the right hemispheric dominant person’s brain – or it is discarded. The resultant Synthesis at the end – whether it remains the same or is adjusted to absorb new information concerning objects or movements among objects – is called Synthesis. – which is unexpected, disappointing, seemingly redundant – even confusing – until one understands that this may be a new – Synthesis! – one that is more Powerful than the one that existed at the start. That is: We have a new – at least, freshened – Synthesis – ready at hand to confront any new experience from the external world. The Synthesis is ‘freshened’ by the mere act of confronting it with new information. It is always exciting when old stuff is shaken up! People who are left hemispheric dominant are simply not privy to excitement such is experienced by right hemispheric dominant people every day – just like this! Sorry!

Thus – as Heidegger’s phenomenology conceives it: First-person experience is never completely objective – as adherents to the practices of natural science have often proclaimed. And this is particularly True at the present time – when progress is almost always limited to advances in understanding of a world that is submicroscopic – a world to which scientists have only limited access: Objects are either too small or are moving too fast for scientists’ instruments to measure. This is a major problem.

Marx

Despite Marx’s own interest in technology, there are surprisingly few Marxist philosophers who deal with the subject. As it turns out: Understanding the role of technology – that is, of Tools – in the economics of Marx is a key to understanding where his ideas actually came from and how his ideas have been misinterpreted.

Up to the time of Marx, economics as an academic discipline had been conducted according to microanalysis of the firm. Economics as a discipline has always been like a modern video game – wherein in this instance – the game could actually play itself! Yes – all one needs was one assumption: Human Greed! Then as it would seem – as with all the myriad variations in and with the exercise of thought during that Enlightened Age – among people such as Descartes and Pangloss – somehow inexorably – the Best of All Possible Worlds would somehow always result! In economics: A practitioner simply has to run his firm in a manner most rewarding to himself. Women were not allowed into the game at this point in time. And then so: What of the National Interest? Well, such a bold conception was merely the aggregation of all those tiny spots of Greed! One spot was happy. All – necessarily – must also be: Happy! Q.E.D. People like Say, and Ricardo jumped onto this avaricious bandwagon. What was there not to like?! Except: In the real world of political affairs there had obviously been ways in the past for leaders to guide the larger economic affairs of a community and nation – and their experience was: Such affairs – never seemed to be amenable or even relatable – to the aggregation of such individual interest. When Kings made decisions – well….

So out of nowhere – comes: Marx! From the start: Marx had a conception of the economy as a Whole. Where in the Devil could one come up with such a perspective. Well, we have gone though all of this elsewhere. But it is important for us to sum things up efficiently and quickly right here.

Well, as we have seen: Philosophy in its more traditional sense has ended with: Hegel. When it comes to economics – that is – economics in its most modern delineation: Well, this is simply astounding but – Hegel finds himself at its inception! How could this ever be?! Well, as far as a rigorous creation of what is now called a ‘macroeconomic theory’ is concerned: It all started when the philosophical theory of Hegel was adapted by Marx to be understood as a physical system which featured a method of creating and utilizing – Tools. And at that moment ‘macroeconomics’ was born. In this sense – economics operates as biological behavior on two levels: First – as a social reflection, duplication – of how the brain works – that is, society as a sort of a type of ‘brain’ – and second – as a description as to how the biological organism of Homo sapiens modernus is able to work at the aggregate – that is, society as a sort of – well, ‘ant colony’ – as a cluster of I s.

One idea that was important with Marx was that humans must be creative to experience joy and happiness. If they are not happy – well, look out – they are liable to revolt! You see – what he was thinking: In the modern industrial system – humans are no longer their own entrepreneurs on their own farms. It is true that for part of that time on the farm – they were the equivalent of a Tool – like a tractor that might be used to till a field. But there was always a aspect in which where they – were the masters in control of their own destiny: Farmer – as entrepreneur!

Now in the factory: Men were simply – objects. Men – were simply: Tools – which in Marx’s estimation was – quite a demotion. It was this idea of Tools and how men were being denigrated, lowered in status – from being creator – to being the equivalent to that which had been created – that was the crux of his revolutionary ideas. Well, to Marx: There simply was no way that normal men – could accept such a slight!

So when it comes to Marx – one should keep the idea of Hegel – with his ideas concerning how intellectual Tools are created – in mind. This will be important as we consider – below – how humans are being treated as objects – by corporations – at the present time.

Freud

Marcuse had a thing concerning: Freud and his theory of imagination. Yes, the imagination is – a psychological faculty. But for Marcuse it provided a possible source of insight into reality – as it might attribute an essential cognitive role to the imagination. The imagination may actually be an important source for new ideas.

Well, when we think all of this through: Imagination actually becomes two different things – when one considers the two sides of the brain. First: Marcuse binds ontology to psychology. Ontology for him in this way becomes physiology – becomes biology. Second: For us, imagination and its possible role in the development of new ideas – is related to Freud’s manner of thought which was related to Freud’s brain which was left hemispheric dominant.

So first: As Marcuse interprets Freud, the imagination is associated with as we say: Ontology – that is, with the mind and how it thinks – how it comes up with ideas – maybe new ideas – with the application of the imagination. For Freud the imagination was related to the erotic, which in a generalized sense Marcuse understands to be Life affirming. Life is motility, becoming, development. Well, all of this obviously is related to sex – and sex is definitely biological. In this way – for Marcuse: The gap between imagined fulfillment, the universal, and the actual condition of particular beings – is the stimulus to development. Life is perpetually engaged in overcoming that gap through transforming the environment and absorbing it into the world of the self. The utopian realization of the universal is not just the static resolution of the contradiction between concept and object, but Marcuse could see that its deployment under social conditions could expand its Power into the continuing development of human capacities. The Marxist application of these ideas is obvious. Marxism has always considered socialism to be a potentiality of capitalism, its negation and true significance in the history of humankind. In this view of the world – the I utilizes the imagination to create new ideas – new possibilities which can lead to aggregates of I s desiring and fighting for new vistas and heights.

The second view – which is our view – is succinct: The reality is – new ideas actually come – from the right side of the brain – of which Freud knew nothing about.

Man, Woman and Tools

In One-Dimensional Man, Marcuse argues that among the conditions of socialism is a transformation of technology, which now provides a total life environment, a ‘world’ in the phenomenological sense of the term – in the sense that the I is always separated from the real world – and thus inhabits a ‘world’ of its own. The impulse behind Marcuse’s critique of technology lies in how it contributes to harmony between human beings and nature. It is in technology that the unity of subject and object promised by idealistic philosophy – is realized. The rejection of mystery exposed the objective world to understanding of the scientist – and therefore also to technical control. Capitalism turned these powers of reason into enemies of Life. Technology under capitalism opposes human beings to nature in a struggle fatal for both, whereas under socialism a reformed technology could protect the natural world and favor forces in nature that contribute to human well-being.

The question is: Is a Tool just another object out in the external world – or is it mind? This makes a difference. Big difference. In the light of Heidegger’s Dasein – tools are never things out there like other objects in Nature. Tools are always a part of the Creator. They are always under the I s control and can be adapted to meet any changes in external requirements. Billionaries are simply not tied to the fiduciary responsibities related to their stock holders as they would have you believe. There is more to the Future of humanity than the mere more, more, more: Of Profit. Tools were created by humans – they remain under human control – and changes can be made – and now at this time in history it is apparent – many changes must be made – now – and quickly!

It was Marx’s insight that humans themselves become Tools – become objects to be manipulated and utilized in the production process. What he forgot was: There are three levels of creativity: physical, intellectual, and Cosmic. So a person can give him- or herself up to be used as a Tool – something created by someone else – and simultaneously receive ample joy and happiness from the creation of a physical type: Babies.

Flower Children

The New Left had something to teach Marcuse. In 1970, his historical experience was not yet over – rather, his involvement in the New Left represented a final chapter in which his own ideas underwent a further transformation. Cultural revolution means politics in what Marcuse called: The ‘depth dimension’ of the psyche, at the level of needs and identities. Earlier, Marcuse had argued that advanced capitalism reached down into the very instincts with its promised paradise of consumption, and thus that the manipulation of Consciousness by the system leads to the internalization of social control. Now, he claimed, this overwhelming force of social integration was answered by any form of resistance. There now arose an existential revulsion at the destructiveness of the system. He was impressed by the dramatic, even clownish aspects of these demonstrations of dissent that he was experiencing. He saw new forms of sociability flower, such as collective living spaces known as ‘communes.’ New media appeared, the so-called ‘underground press’, that carried the message outside the regular channels of information.

By the time one reached the 1970s – humans were living in a world of created objects. There now were more young people than in the past – who now were still not married in their early twenties – many of these were not in a university where they could have participated in creative intellectual work. Thus there were many young people who were feeling a lack of joy and happiness that membership in family can impart. So participating in a movement was – participating in the creation of a social Tool. Yes: Here was a new avenue for creative expression! There is joy and happiness to be derived from the joint creation of a Tool that can impact the external world and can help shape society.

Towards a New Philosophy of Creativity

Marcuse’s early writings already announced the basic concepts that emerged in his work towards the end of his career. Two concepts are especially important: Reason – the capacity to know the universal and, on that basis, to freely create projects that transcend the given; and potentiality – the perpetual dissatisfaction of beings with their current state as they strive for a higher state. Reason operates with universal concepts that enable the ordering of the infinite flux of experience in a coherent world. That world can be understood rationally in terms of its nature and the laws that move it. But reason is also a subjective disposition, a mode of Being. As such, it empowers the rational individual to hold the world and its own impulses at a distance. Reason thus achieves a new relation to reality. Marcuse became centrally concerned with the existential meaning of rationality in this sense – the I ‘s central role in intellectual thought. Never in a thousand years would he have imagined – that such ideas might lead to: the Death of Philosophy!

The King is Dead!

Long Live the King!

In the past there has been a clear division of labor between philosophy and natural science: Philosophy will not posit ‘real’ entities, and science will not pretend to explain Consciousness.

For Marcuse the question was: How can a material principle play the role of constituent subjectivity. Okay: We must immediately transform gobblygook words like this into real ideas. Like – in real words – the Truth we must face is: There is an I in our brain that is a hydrogen ion. Yes: It is – a physical entity. However, it doesn’t stop there. All physical things are made of particles – which possess Consciousness. What is Consciousness? We do not know and never will. It is given a word that recognizes this ignorance – it is a word that all scientists wish to avoid – but if they could only face it – accept it – employ the Powers it does Possess – they could still Fire up these Powers – and use them to help humans survive on this rock in the sky.

Consciousness is simply: Magic! Yes – that is the word. Which actually means – nothing. Since we have no idea what it is and never will. Still We know what it does. Which fact must be responded to with: Great Respect! Consciousness possesses great Power! It can create Tools. So Yes: There are things that we never will know. However, we are Homo sapiens – we have a cognitive Power never before seen on Earth – although we are receiving hints that humble things such as submicroscopic hydrogen ions can, could, and are doing amazing things. There is a ninety-nine percent chance that they created Life!

So we do not know what Consciousness is, as we said before – but we do know it can possess tremendous capability. It can build: Tools. Humans each possess such a hydrogen ion – so they too each possess tremendous potential – either working alone – but in most cases if they somehow can stop fighting each other – and simply – work together.

In the end – all devolves – as Marcuse suspected – into the question of the I . To disalienate philosophical reason, the real subject must be acknowledged behind the veil of Magic. In the end philosophy falls into biology with the realization that the I in every living entity is a hydrogen ion – which is a physical thing. This physical thing becomes part of the human brain as long as an organism lives and during this time is in fact: An item of biology. So every aspect of philosophy from Plato to existentialism becomes a description of the structure and workings of the human brain – from the ‘inside out’.

Okay – so where are we? The answer is: Obvious. We have our work cut out for us. We simply must build a new philosophy. Sounds easy?: No – such words imply that we really need – to build a totally new world society – from the bottom up – founded upon Creativity.

Man, Woman as Commodities

As we say: When families lived on farms, it was easier to keep things straight. Well, Dad was like a tractor – he was a tool that dug the ditches irrigated the crops. But he was also the entrepreneur. He was a creator. He ran a business that made food. In this way the entire family was part of a creative unit. There was physical creativity – the family produced children. There was intellectual creativity – the family came up with ideas about which crops might be most lucrative for income during the next ten years. There was Cosmic creativity – the family actually impacted the world – put its ideas to work making food for the world to eat. As we say: Babies. Marx always forgot about these: Farming was a very satisfying creative way of Life.

Then there was the city. As Marx pointed out: Most people lost the creative aspects of their lives except for physical creativity – that is, having children. Even the work of people who had gone to college and learned how to use their brains – well, often their work became routinized, stressful, boring. And as we all know: for some reason city people tend to have fewer children – so city people have displayed less and less creativity generally. People in general simply have fewer and fewer creative opportunities. Many are capable of earning enough money to meet their physical needs.- yet many are feeling more and more as if they are merely ‘Tools’ themselves in an economic system. Creativity is the only source of joy and happiness. People are becoming more and more unhappy. People are becoming more and more angry.

And now things are getting worse! Social media is raising its ugly head! This is an activity which is supposedly recreational and thus body and mind renewal in its positive aspects. Yet is it not obvious that the consumer in this instance – has in fact – in many instances and many aspects of his or her life – has simply become – a commodity – himself – herself! This is worse – far worse – than becoming just a tool. A tool is usually amply compensated – its one defect is: It just does not render joy and happiness to its provider. A commodity on the other hand – is merely consumed – with less and less compensation – certainly in a monetary sense – in social media the consumer pays to be a commodity. A person on line – becomes an implement which some rich people utilize to make indecent profits. People are becoming implements in most ways – finally Marx’s warnings are seeming to becoming True. People are more and more in debt – they have entered a Life filled with a type of slavery! People talk to each other and supply all the content. In social media people do benefit from conversations and interactions just as they do in a phone call – yet they are paying for a commodity that they themselves are providing. In addition, they are innundated by advertisements directed by analysis of, alogrhythms processing, their data. People are creating – well, they have become – the commodities being consumed and are paying far too much in the process.

There is another level to this – that is even more cynical – even more disturbing: Social media has an indirect cost that goes far beyond simple expenditure of money. A person has a finite lifetime. Time is given to a person freely at birth – but it is finite and therefore precious. Social media supposedly is providing entertainment and refueling of the human Tool, the human machine that produces goods for the economy. But social media is offering that Tool as a commodity for consumption at a cost to the living commodity him or herself and he or she is paying with a resource that is far more far more precious than that of money. People are losing minutes of their lives and are paying for this abuse. In the case of the sex worker – well, he or she is providing a service – yet after a while it must become obvious that in this case the worker is also definitely: The commodity. This commodization of lives and time might be rationalized as being a necessary part of rendering a service for which one is hopefully being paid in a sufficient manner. But in the instance of social media this is definitely not the case. Companies are making rich profits at the expense of a hapless population. And people are getting more and more angry. They are becoming more and more unhappy.

Man, Woman, and Creativity

Our lives are now filled with non-Nature. Well, tools are peculiar: they are biological – like a spider’s web – we are the ape that creates tools – so – yes they are biological – Yet: Not! And yes commodities are also biological in an increasingly stretched out relationship with tools and apes: Yet Not! And then we: Are becoming commodities ourselves – the height of indignities! We have no idea what just happened – it would take us several weeks to straighten things out. We mean: At this point are we still even biological creatures? – or has Zuckenberg somehow made us – a wrench. Well: We shall merely merrily just continue on – as if – we are somehow unaffected.

We must just stop right now – right here and acknowledge again one truth: Dasein. When we were undergoing Industrial Revolution: Yes, we were lifting man and woman up out of the Dark Ages. We could afford to overlook ‘externalities’ – that such transformation might be causing: Fouling the air, polluting the environment. But that excitement is past. Now we are like a spider with its web. The web in our case is not just some strange object we might run into out there in the external world. Our ‘web’ is very much apart of us as the web is to the spider. However, we are different from the spider: the web is not a product of instinct and so is out of control of our I. Our tools were made by our I s and thus were not implanted into our DNA like the spider web. As Creators we must take responsibility for extensions of our I s into the external world – placing the future of humanity in jeopardy – just as Tools like social media are degrading our humanity.

Man, Woman and the Future

We must simply go back to the farm – way of life: Where there is creativity at every level – there is joy and happiness. There is little anger. There is little reason to be angry at anyone or anything beyond – the weather. We looked at such a world in our book: Omicron Blue – which was written 50 years ago.

Omicron Blue was written in another century – addressing a future wherein: We are – right now! According this book: By this point 2023 – machines could and should have taking over their rightful place in our lives by now – and humans must have rightfully stopped being ‘Tools’! So – automated cities: Piles of tools should be making all we need and people then would be able to just concentrate upon being: Well, People – being human beings instead of being parts of machinery. Instead: Not only do we still claim the same status as Tools – our lives have become completely filled with and we have become dependent upon all the commodities – that tools make. We are immersed into a complete material world – a world that machinery and people are working hard to fill every aspect of our Lives with material things – to help keep the economies moving.

People are bored. They are looking for the next Big thing: Big truck – Big gun. Only Creativity gives one joy and happiness. Our schools are trying – trying very hard. But in the end – we the people must simply arise and take care of things ourselves. Groups, clusters of people thinking, working together is why humans have survived in the past. Creative clusters must arise again and lead the way – towards the Future

People nowadays need each other. They need to be working together somehow in ways in which they feel they are creative – that they are making a beneficial impact upon the world. We need creative Clusters wherein all are participating – wherein all are contributing to a creativity – that really changes things – really impacts the world for the better. This is not some idle work that we can just kind of throw together in a moment. It will require thinking at the highest level. It will require infrastructure.

So, my friends – philosophy in its traditional sense must now be declared Dead! People are being paid a lot of money to keep stating the same biological things over and over again. And they are not biologists!

No – philosophers must move to other subjects – to another level of work that can really help people. We need to start taking the whole matter of creativity seriously. That is: Creating things besides new people – more people. The earth is finite. We need to stop population explosion. Instead – we need ideas. We need innovation of every type: Contribution at every level towards accomplishment – that truly helps – truly changes things for the better – joy and happiness for all who are involved. Every day people are becoming less and less creative. They are becoming more and more like Tools. And now they are even becoming mere commodities – providing their bodies and time to a world – and paying for the privilege for doing this! This is: Insanity!

But solutions are not simple: We can’t just pile up machinery and let it make a bunch of stuff that we really need. We can’t simply stop consuming ourselves. Because – as the French Revolution displayed to the world: Humanity is always an inch away from boredom – and the mob. We must remain aware that people must remain occupied – always doing something – almost anything – or they will just simply start killing each other. We are unlike all other animals – we mean, all Life is predicated upon Death. But no species kills itself – except for the human species.

So these are the types of questions that philosophers should be addressing instead of the stupid ones they chant in a matra over and over again that are related to biology which are real and important – but actually someone else’s concern. Philosophers need to move on They need to be considering truly monumental questions – such as we have broached above. Humanity has simply evolved to become: Too smart. The trick is: If people are creative: They receive joy and happiness. But again – we are too smart: We don’t need more children – which is the only sure way for people to be creative in a non-intellectual way. So the question is: Can people work in groups – can the groups can be creative and will participation in such creativity provide the joy and happiness – we intelligent mammals truly seek?

Around 1980, the world was presented with a musical: ‘Sweeny Todd’ – in which human beings are served up as hamburger. It is/was an example of a cautionary tale gone very much wrong. Our hero is Andy Warhol: He simply gave us – a soup can. He did not stand on a pedestal in Central Park and proclaim that he was a postmodernist or something. He just simply: Gave us a – can. His message: Two-thirds of the world is being left behind. Americans have little Culture. Beware!

The authors of this minibook are concentrating on both: Breakthroughs in science – and breakthroughs in music theory. ‘Sweeny Todd’ was supposed to change people’s behavior. It failed. Perhaps better Culture will be able to – get the message out!

Introduction

If we recognize that plants – well, atoms, in general – are not objects – they have their own agency – then we have potential partners in confronting the world’s problems. Cosmic co-operation between humans and many different kinds of Conscious entities – may be necessary to ensure the survival of humanity. We have been reading a book, Planta Sapiens – The NewScience of Plant Intelligence, by Paco Calvo. Dr. Calvo is a professor of the philosophy of science and principal investigator at the Universidad de Mureia’s Minimal Intelligence Lab MINTLab) in Spain. His research interests range broadly within the cognitve sciences, with special emphasis on plant intelligence, ecological, and embodied cognitive science. After two decades of research, he has found a rich and here-to-for unexplored world. He is convinced that every plant possesses some sort of intelligence. We – after 60 years of research – are highly certain – for a number of reasons – that each plant – is actually brandishing forth – a countless number of I s.

The authors of this minibook have written several regular-sized books – and many minibooks – that is, smaller but intensive investigations – on Consciousness – during the past fifty years. We wrote the book: Man and the Cosmos – The Science of Everything – during the 1970s. We have our own Science and our own Scientific Method. The instruments that scientists use – are unable to measure objects that are too small or are moving too fast. Humanity in its Industrial Revolution age has utilized almost everything at hand that is visible by eye or microscope. We now must work with the sub-microscopic world. In this endeavor – because of the inadequacies of scientific instruments in a virtually invisible world: Our Science utilizes all of the disciplines in the university curriculum to attack problems from all sides – from every angle. Our Method: Uses the inductive Powers of scientists who are right-hemispheric dominant – who are by means of standard admission procedures – screened out of university work completely – it would seem! When we use both sides of the brain – coupled with our new Science – to tackle difficult problems: Unbelievable progress is able to be made.

Some of our breakthroughs are:

There is a hydrogen ion in our brain – that is ‘looking out’. This has made it possible for us to consider empirical data about phenomena at the atomic level received from personal experience. As we say: Humanity must now operate at the level of the atom in order to bring forth the next Industrial Revolution. We are ‘looking out’ from the center of a hydrogen ion. We are able to obtain information about atoms from our own personal observation!

We have investigated the social sciences from that same unique perspective: We have seen how they can be made more Powerful – through the perspective of the I.

We have studied chemistry and physics – and new worlds are now opening up – now that we understand that every particle in the universe possesses Consciousness:

When it comes to chemistry: Atoms possess Consciousness: They communicate with other particles. If we can learn their language: We can create new molecules. Scientists can access new sources of Energy. We can work with – atoms now. This new collaboration can bring forth: An astoundingly new – Industrial Revolution!

We are able to consider physics and quantum mechanics from the unique perspective of the I . In the past this investigation has been hampered by the fact: Much speculation has been made necessary – by the fact that scientists have been working in the face of – a Black Box. There are particles – there are waves – physicists know little about what each is – about what each does. As we say: Each person has an unique perspective upon phenomena such as these: We are ‘looking out’ from the center of an atom – from the center of a Black Hole! Physics has been slowed for over a hundred years. Our I s – will allow us to made the necessary breakthroughs – and start making progress in this most important theoretical world – again.

As we say: We have a new Science. When we develop our hypotheses: We work with twelve different disciplines. We come up with a Synthesis – in which all breakthroughs – from every source – are consistent. We are 99 percent certain that our hypotheses are True. Induction does not yield certainty – only the left side of the brain combined with the results of experiments can give absolute certainty. We feel that there exists a great enough probability of our ideas being True – that intensive investigation by universities – is warranted.

With a new Science, a new Method, and our new ‘microscope’ – our I : We are able to see all the world – in a new Light!

Introduction

We are scientists…we are not Creationists! We are philosophers…we are not Bible slammers! Our ideas proceed from the book, Man and Cosmos…The Science of Everything…by the author of this minibook.. The first draft of that book was written during the 1970s…it was based on the hypothesis that humans are animals. This hypothesis has been found to be scientifically verifiable from the delineation of the human genome…and the comparison of that genome with those of the great apes….On the basis of that analysis, humans are 99.3 percent identical to chimpanzees. If this is true…and it is…then the social sciences must be rewritten and placed on a biological base. Such an empowered science of man and woman is urgently needed in a century in which there is a fifty percent chance that human civilization as we know it…may be extinguished.

That theology held the belief…that consciousness exists in all living things…That theology was confused by the practice of utilizing hallucinations brought about by food and sensory deprivation in the arctic regions where that theology arose…these practices spread worldwide, utilizing the application of drugs in warmer areas to induce hallucinations. This religion was based on the concept of ‘spirits,’ which were seen in hallucinatory trances…which led to the religions found world-wide today. Shamanism is consistent with our Cosmic theology in that it believes that consciousness exists in all things…It is different because it believes that much of the ‘plant-animal’ world goes to a ‘spirit world’ after death…A shaman in a trance…often has a spirit guide animal who helps him traverse the spirit world…to heal sickness, control the weather, or influence the hunt…and visit relatives and friends of those in a community… shamanism seems to deal mainly with fear that exists in a hostile environment in which people may live…and with the fear of death and loss of loved ones….

A Cosmic theology such as ours…also identifies two worlds…however, we see one world built up out of the other…The Cosmos is composed of particles… that world possesses its own basic laws and principles such as Equality of entities, Truth, Beauty, Will, and Love….The plant-animal world built from these particles represents a second level…with its own priorities such as survival of the fittest and avoidance of death in general….Entities in the Cosmic world are eternal…death is not an issue….As abhorrent as death is to the plant-animal world… that world actually is rife with death…much of it in fact is built upon it..There is only one sun…As far as our plant-animal world is concerned…all energy in plant-animal life comes from it…so if entities do not convert sun into energy, they must eat each other to obtain that energy…In shamanism the difference between these two worlds is blurred…in the hopes of ameliorating fears of death…Shamans have constructed a theology that allows the plant-animal life to continue in a way…somewhere else…after death….

In our conception of things…the plant-animal world and the Cosmic world intersect every day…in that many of the concepts from the Cosmic world Equality, Truth, Beauty, Will and Love…are valid and powerful when utilized in the plant-animal world in relationships among people and nations…they intersect also in the fact that it seems that one priority of the plant-animal world is to find one other individual…to connect closely with… This close intimate association with another individual is usually in a sexual relationship that produces offspring…A close connection between two entities in the plant-animal world is usually indispensable in meeting the needs of plant-animal life based upon replication…Plant-animal life is transient…a species must reproduce to survive…Such a deep, close sexual connection in the plant-animal world…is actually similar to the Cosmic conception of Love…Will is Cosmic Power which propels Cosmic activity…Love is Cosmic Connection which unites Cosmic activity in Law…Love is Form which contains, restrains Will and Power…Close relationships on earth, even if it is momentary for some animals…might provide connection between ‘I’s that is so close and tight…that the binding of these particles and entities may continue after plant-animal death…Consciousness never dies in the Cosmic world…yet what occurs on earth may impact what happens to entities after plant-animal death…close, intimate connections on earth…might allow I‘s to remain in the Light…in active parts of the universe in a Cosmic eternity….and not be condemned to remain in realms of dark energy and dark matter in the universe…condemned to darkness and restricted activity…forever….

As we say…our hypothesis concerning the ‘I’…that is, concerning the Cosmic world…that all atoms possess consciousness… rises from a Science of Everything…in which the disciplines concerning man and woman are placed on a biological base and become one with the physical and biological sciences…In this way all disciplines can work together, talk to each other… When this is done, there are several different disciplines and areas of thought that speak to the possibility of the existence of the ‘I’ in all living things…philosophy, evolutionary biology, the cosmology of physics, neurological science, the biology of the cell, and theology. Scientists are reluctant to pursue research that may be contaminated by the ideas of a mediaeval Church much less a viewpoint that is pantheistic, animistic in nature. However, it would be tragic, no, way more than tragic…if a cure for cancer were to be long delayed because of things right before them…that they are not allowed to touch. With this in mind…let us consider the origins of life.

Oh, I know…we think of ourselves as being so thoroughly modern… yet there is truth in ideas that have been discarded…I know…we are trying to move out from a Dark Age…there are so many ideas and institutions that have placed a stranglehold on pulses of energy towards progress, towards a bright future for man and womankind…and those negative forces still abound …There is Creationism, there is Donald Trump…the world seems to be bolting off at full speed into the beautiful blue of the future…yet so many ideas and practices are still there..slowing progress…a large part of modern society is seemingly being left further and further behind with archaic ideas….this is tearing the fabric of society apart…It would be easier to get everyone on board if science were moving smoothly…but ideas that we proudly champion as being modern have encountered obstacles…new breakthroughs are needed and ironically we must not let our deprecation of certain ideas from the past… hold us back…perhaps we should take a second and review things…perhaps some things we have thrown on the junk pile actually may possess diamonds of thought that can help us break through and fly into the future….

Yes, Darwin has shown that we are just animals and that life is merely replication of atoms….randomly combining in some ways that are successful in the face of the world…other ways not so successful…Things seem to be controlled, produced by…just blind luck….We are all agreed that there is not some old wise man up in heaven somewhere watching over us…yet…there is the Cosmos…and there is the bizarre flabbergasting fact that each of us… possesses something inside of us…’looking out’…each of us can see that he or she is the center of the universe….and that each animal whether it can understand such a thing…is experiencing the same thing…This is something we must accept even though there is no logic or common sense to unravel the conundrum…..However, the fact is…if we can set aside our fear of sinking back into what has been dismissed as being pagan conceptions…we may find an idea or two that can accelerate us even faster into the future….

There is the idea of the ‘I’. Heretofore, in building a cosmic theology, we have looked to the single-celled animals existing in ancient seas…to sift out truth concerning our consciousness…As recounted below, we have noted how plant-like things became animal-like things almost instantly…this led to the realization that maybe something simple like a hydrogen ion may have been added to the organism that allowed it to perceive, think, and act….Now let us go back even further…back to the first stirrings of life itself…Biology in this respect is like geology…what is happening today, has happened in the past, and will continue into the future…Consciousness doesn’t just sit there…’looking out’…it perceives, thinks, and acts….the first ‘I’ probably could do this too…Let us go back…way back…to the very beginning…If we can see evidence…if we can see the possibility of the ‘I’ operating way back at the very beginning…this would increase the probability even more …that our hypothesis concerning the ‘I’…is true…..

Let Us Review

I have written the following several times before in other places…but for some of you this is the first time…so let us review…For others…you may skip to new sections of this minibook…

To begin with, we are encountering three types of “I”….there is I…that is, there is me…I do things and I am writing this minibook…then there is I…this is an I coupled with an idea…I have an idea, that is, I realize, that there is something inside my head ‘looking out’…this is consciousness…then thirdly, there is ‘I’… this is a particle…something physiologically inside my brain that is performing the ‘looking out’….

So…what is an ‘I’ particle?…I believe that every atom has an ‘I’…Just as you have something ‘looking out’…I believe that every atom has a particle within it…capable of…’looking out’. Scientists are forbad contemplating such things…However, as I have said…six different disciplines and areas of thought I have studied…point toward such a hypothesis….The fight against cancer has been throttled because crucial steps have been blocked…I believe that this fight can gain renewed vigor…if the power of the ‘I’ particle is allowed to open the way….I know this ‘I’ particle hypothesis is surprising ….but science is being slowed in recent decades because of the futility of our instruments…things are either too small…or too fast to be measured correctly…or be discerned at all. I have proposed the use of an interdisciplinary approach to overcome the inadequacies of our instruments. When we utilize such an approach…we uncover surprising things….

Let us start with philosophy and theology….In my book, Man and the Cosmos...I have a chapter entitled…’Man and a Cosmic Theology.’ That chapter begins with the following ideas…

The strategy of the seventeenth century French philosopher, René Descartes (1596-1656), is important in organizing my book, Man and the Cosmos…He believed that one should begin with what is most ‘clear and distinct’ to his or her mind…and then proceed outwards into the world…When he considered what was most ‘clear and distinct’ to his mind…he proclaimed…’I think; therefore, I am.’ What he began with…was his mind… that is, things in his mind were most clear…most distinct to him. Therefore, when I reexamined the social sciences…well, we know we are animals now… we look at DNA…we are 99.3 percent the same as a chimpanzee…so the social sciences must be redone…they must be placed on a biological base…So I utilized Descartes’ approach…and started with philosophy…the science of the mind…then moved out to psychology, the physiology of the brain…then to anthropology, the building of tools which connects the mind with the external world and allows the mind to impact all around it…then there is sociology, the larger tools of society, its institutions and grand systems of interconnection… economics, we learn that goods move one way, money the other…thus flows of money becomes a similacrum for biological activity..out, out to theology, where all collapses into materialism…yet a new kind of materialism…one that embodies mind…and so…we find ourselves back at the beginning again!…Around and around as we work arduously at the conversion process in the grand project of viewing humans as animals…starting with things that are most clear and distinct to us…Out, out, out… to things less clear and distinct….where…in the end…surprisingly…all is one….

There is a second thing Descartes probably meant…with the proclamation …’I think; therefore, I am’…The second thing that he probably meant here was…that he was making an empirical observation!…He was making an empirical observation that sneaks up on a person…then pow!…suddenly, you realize that this observation is hard evidence…And just as he was able to deduce a whole philosophy from this one hard fact…this one sentence…this one syllogism…we too can start with it…we can write a book reworking the social sciences…and we can hypothesize amazing things.

The startling observation that Descartes made…was new…Somehow, no one had really noticed it before…Each person on earth is in a position to make this observation…we all do…yet in a sense we shrug it off and continue on our way. What he observed was...I am thinking, I am seeing, I am acting…I am inspecting the world around me. That I is different from my ordinary I…as I have said, it is an I coupled with an idea…a revolutionary idea…that idea is: I have empirical evidence that there is a part of me…that is different from everything else around me…at least to begin with…There is a part of me that is surprisingly important…This is an idea that lives in my private thoughts…I would never share such an egotistic thought with even my closest friends… There is a part of me that can elevate me to the lofty seat of a king or queen…maybe like a small god…Gee…what is this thing?… We all could use a thing like this,,,that…and we all have it…Okay,, what it is…is an idea…that idea is…that there is something inside of me…that is Cosmic… probably eternal. Why would I think something like this?…because I…I…dammit…am ‘looking out! I...am the center of the world…of the whole Cosmos!

I am…I exist…and this is not merely an illusion caused by a collection of neurons. I am ‘looking out’…and this fact is incontrovertible. As I say…I am the center of the world. I am like a god. Such a realization obviously leads to an enthusiastic acquisition of self respect…All of this is a bit blasphemous … no, it is a whole lot blasphemous…500 years ago…I could well have been burnt alive at the stake for having the audacity to say such a thing.

However, it appears that the whole thing is true…and, the whole thing is startling. Why are we so humble? We each think…know…that we…I…am the ‘eyes’ of the universe. If we are extinguished…if all I‘s are extinguished…the universe would disappear…Bishop George Berkeley went through all of this…but he missed the most important part…Yes, as he said…everything is relative because our I‘s are all in different positions with respect to the world around us…and all perception must be adjusted for differences in perspective…But he missed the most important thing…what Descartes saw right there…at the beginning of his philosophy…Everything is different from me…from my perspective…because I have an I…generated within by an ‘I’…as I have said…quotation marks refer to a part of the brain…that is ‘looking out’.

We are humble, but our experience tells us we should be otherwise… well, we should be proud of ourselves…based on that experience…we are certainly very special…Of course, we can look around, see things and make generalizations…We can conjecture that other organisms, such as our friends, may have I‘s also…so maybe we aren’t so special….As concerning those other organisms…we can never be really certain…What I mean is…I am the center of the universe…each of my friends…feel the same way!?….This is crazy…We can never be fully in another person’s shoes…because, yes, he or she has an I just like mine…but she, he…thinks…he, she…is the center of everything, too….I would have never thought…That person!…thinks he, she, it…is as important as I…the nerve!…But it must be the case…All of these I’s…and what it must mean…is inexplicable!

Well, that is a conundrum we must leave alone..because like Descartes, there is only one truth we really know is true…really, really know is true…and that…is that…I…anyway, for sure…am ‘looking out’. Yes…that is for sure…The rest of you….God bless you… are on your own.

So there is empirical evidence for the existence of the ‘I’…and if another person doubts that I possess such a thing…well, he or she can just simply ask me…and I shall reassure him or her…that it is indeed true…Yes, indeed…I do possess an I...So in this way, a thorough-going scientist can merely go around the world…and every ask every blessed person…if it is indeed true…Are they indeed ‘looking out’…are they truly the center of the universe?.. And yes, that scientist would indeed have empirical evidence of some sort of such a thing ..and while that does not actually prove that many I ‘s exist…still, …if democracy has any validity at all…if in fact everyone you ask…has voted…and has sworn on a pile of cosmic rocks…that what he or she is saying is true…well, it would seem that it is unanimous!…it would seem that there are 7 billion I’s out there…this is all empirically proven to be true!…sort of…, in so far as democracy…may be able to render Truth.

Let us move on to a second point…We can see that all life dies… …so we shall, also. Thus, it appears that our I will be annihilated…and there is nothing we can do about it. What we are forgetting is that we have empirical evidence of another possibility…another truth. We have an I…and we are the center of everything. If this I were expanded trillions and trillions of times…that great I...would be a god. See how philosophy has led straightway to theology…skipping all the steps, all the disciplines in between…we skip directly to the conclusion…Like Descartes…we have an ontological proof that God exists…I believe that this is where the concept of God came from… from a belief we possess…that we possess an I …that is too important to be extinguished…it is a gut feeling that we have…You say …this proves nothing…that I might think there is a green genie in the corner over there…But this…is different…

Given the startling realization that every animal on earth has an I like mine…’looking out’…this gives us a hunch that we can empirically verify our hypothesis…about the I…because we have reason to believe that this ‘I’ in our brain is a particle…Well, in the very, very, very beginning everything was energy…but within microseconds some of that energy became contained… isolated, confined within…particles…Yes the universe we can see is composed of contained energy…composed of particles…so this I of mine must be a phenomenon related to a particle…or particles…so we have a place to start…

If my I is related to a particle…then there is a possibility that we can prove our hypothesis scientifically at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN…What do we know about this I…so that we shall know what we are looking for when we start running experiments on particles?….If we are looking at particles…then the ‘I’ is not ‘spirit’ like the shamans came up in hallucinogenic trances…What else do we know about this ‘I’?

Could it be …that if we learn enough about this so called ‘I’…we might know enough to solve major problems in the world…like cancer?

The ‘I’

As I say…what scientists do know…is that four percent of the Cosmos…the word ‘Cosmos’ with a capital ‘C’ refers to a cosmos which possesses consciousness… Scientists know that everything in the four percent of the Cosmos that is blowing up…and out…that is, the part of the Cosmos that is in the Light…is made of energy…and the amount of this energy is conserved… is preserved…energy is never destroyed…there always has and always will be the same amount of energy in the universe…Nikola Tesla believed that the cosmos was filled with an ocean of energy…He believed that this energy is concentrated at certain points into vortexes…which we call particles which are combined into atoms …or are conveyed in packets which are particles which can move quickly transmitting, impacting other particles with forces…In this way…all of the energy that we see is encased in parcels called particles…energy in packets is able to interact with other matter…with other particles…the rest of the ocean is dark and cannot…All matter and forces which can be identified in the cosmos…is encased in particles… therefore, if there is something inside my head…’looking out’…it must be a particle…let’s call this an ‘I’ particle, or an ‘I’ …for short.

So I have an ‘I’…Does all life have an ‘I’?…Actually I believe that every atom possesses an ‘I’…however, only in animals is the ‘I’ obviously allowed to be ‘expressed’….The change, the difference in the behavior between animals and everything else began with vegetable plankton…That is, at first, plankton floated like a leaf on or beneath the sea or other bodies of water…they all were passive. Suddenly some plankton became active…they began to search for food…they began to avoid predators…According to scientists today… plankton such as these…that move…are not really animals…because they are not eucaryotes…technically, an organism must possess a nucleus, in which genetic material is kept…to be properly called an ‘animal’…However, this change from non-movement to movement…to propelled movement was astonishing…it was enough of a change for us to at least say that the new organism was at least…’animal-like’….It was the first indication that something…in the cell wall of the plankton…was, is ‘in charge’. Of course, the fact is…that something was in charge of the internal activity of the plankton…all along….But this tremendous change in outward behavior occurred with little change in bacterial DNA…Something was added that was of major significance in itself…What was added must have had abilities capabilities of its own..it had to be able to perceive, think, and act…it required only the addition of a few appendages in a plankton to empower these innate abilities…to transform these abilities operating in a minute way into a way that was larger…probably not a whole lot larger to begin with…Evolution transformed these minute abilities into empowered ones..into the outward behavior of an organism.

The ‘I’ in plankton somehow ‘called forth’ …allowed the formation of…brain. It allowed the evolution of the brain around that minute ‘I’… it allowed plant-like things to change into animal-like things…it allowed organisms to become active, aggressive…instead of passive…it increased organisms’ chances for survival.

When one speaks of cognition, one says that it is like turning on a light…when one speaks of intellect…of knowledge…we say..let there be light. That is why at first it was tempting to conjecture that ‘I’s are photons. This possibility is interesting…as photons are able to combine and become one…which would allow us to jump ahead in our thinking… individual ‘I’s might combine to become god-like ‘I’s in stars and nebulae… Our heads were spinning with the possibilities that light might have…if photons were ‘I’ particles.

But…photons don’t have the enough components that would be necessary to perceive, think, and act…the abilities that ‘I’s impart to plankton…It is more likely that ‘I’s are in atoms, and that every atom has one…If this is true, then atoms cannot become one larger atom…they can combine to form molecules but not one larger ‘I’…Thus, all atoms and ‘I’s…were one..only at the moment…of the Big Bang…before there were particles…before there were atoms….This is the conclusion you come to…God must have existed only at the very very very beginning…when you look for a big ‘I’…for a God.

So let us think this through…if a particle is to be an ‘I’ particle, then it must do more than sit there…’looking out’…It must perceive, think, and act. Thus an ‘I’ particle must have components linked to it that can perform three functions. Perhaps quarks in an atom could perform these functions. So an atom could have a particle yet to be discovered…maybe like a ‘p’ particle… that could be ‘looking out’…and is empowered by the three quarks that exist in every atom…The quarks…although two have similar spins…may perform different functions…thus, each atom may have the potential to do a lot…if the conditions are right. Why don’t we notice more of these powers…when we examine atoms?

Well, for one thing…all of this operates at a level beneath the radar…beneath the power of our instruments…this is stealth at its most challenging…that is why quantum mechanics has not progressed very much since 1925…We have a whole lot of trouble… studying the nuclei of atoms. We have made progress…discovered a lot of particles by using cyclotrons…that is, by smashing nuclei to pieces…we have ended up with a lot of particles but we have no idea what these particles do in the nuclei of atoms…Could an ‘I’ particle be hiding in the debris?… does the Cosmos require a prodigious amount of energy to produce an ‘I’ that we can see?

The question is…how can an atom express itself…display and utilize its powers…if electrons are in the way? The nucleus of an atom could communicate with the world around it…if the electron cloud around it…could be removed. This leads one to consider the possibility of ions…that is, atoms where electron fields have been stripped away…such stripping would be easier to secure completely in the instance of a hydrogen atom that has only one electron to get rid of…

A hydrogen ion!…Immediately things come to my mind…If one is looking at a plant…a vegetable plankton…there are already a lot of hydrogen ions at hand…primarily in the compartments and activity of photosynthesis… if one of these hydrogen ions in the photosynthesis compartments could have become ‘activated’ somehow…could have become ‘in charge’ …somehow…it would already have been connected to an ‘axon’…a column of hydrogen ions conveying energy through the modules….converted to convey information instead…this column of hydrogen ions would have already been connected to photosynthesis light receiving areas…thus, this hydrogen ion, this organism, would already possess a rudimentary ‘eye’! The conveyance of information by means of hydrogen ions in plankton would thus predate and be precursors for the courier ions in our brain…calcium, sodium, and potassium ions…

In paramecium…a spike of a brain has developed in its cell wall about what we can hypothesize to be an ‘I’ particle…From the time of paramecium on…brain continued to evolve to augment the innate powers of the ‘I’ particle…until it reached the extent of the wondrous mind of man and woman…

How is an ‘I’ added to living material to make an animal now? We don’t know…but it must be relative easy to do…witness: that each of 600 million sperm in one human emission all seem to possess an ‘I’. Do human eggs have ‘I’s? We know that human eggs can produce viable offspring without sperm…although they are barren. So each egg must possess an ‘I’. Therefore, the sperm and egg must both have ‘I’s…Why doesn’t the baby have two ‘I’s? Perhaps the two ‘I’s combine to become a single ‘I’ at an early state…which would have problems empirically…because two atoms cannot become one…More likely one ‘I’ is eliminated…by giving it an electron.

There is so much to think about…We have reason to believe that ‘I’s are eternal and that there is such a thing as conservation of ‘I’s…’I’s are never lost…they can be ‘constrained’…that is, their power limited by electron fields around the atom…or they can be ‘revealed’…when electron fields are removed…or no electrons are left at all…If an atom has more than one electron…things may end up in an ‘in-between’ situation…neither completely ‘concealed’ nor completely ‘revealed’…As one or more electrons may be removed…some electrons may still remain…As I say… the nucleus…would be partially ‘revealed’…This partial revelation may leave you with ions..such as exist in the human brain…like sodium, calcium, and potassium ions…which may result in partial ‘revelation’ of the powers of the abilities of the ‘I’. Instead of being ‘in charge’…an ion, with its associated electromagnetic waves…may have the power…to move information…transfer, deliver… ideas …in the electromagnetic waves that accompany the movement of ions…transfer ideas from perception areas, for example, to a hydrogen ion where it can be ‘thought’ about…which then can lead to ‘action’….

The fact is…if ions possess consciousness that is ‘revealed’…then ions in a star…can come close to being one…yet they have nuclei, therefore, they can never really be one…perhaps they can flash back and forth…from the ability to ‘look out’ as one…to individual points of consciousness…

All of this is very exciting…there are so many possibilities to think about…The major thing is…If all energy possesses I…if every atom possesses an ‘I’…then our entire concept of ‘materialism’…has changed.

So the difference between plant and animal is…plants have no ”I’ ‘looking out.’ But it appears that ‘I’s have been at work for a long time before the appearance of animal-like plankton….when one looks at the complexity of the inside of a human cell…reactions, interactions taking place at the rate of ten per second…It is true that enzymes increase the speed of reaction and interactions by one hundred millions of times….nevertheless, it is tempting to say that something is guiding all this…furthermore, the study of cells directed towards a cure for cancer has been slowed in several areas…these areas are where we would expect the ‘I’ particle to reside…Oh, I know… anything we do not understand we ascribe to God…we might as well ascribe it to an ‘I’ particle. But hear me out…cancer is too important a topic…to ignore possibilities.

Well, the activities of a cell are very complicated…but in my minibook, The ‘I’ and a Cure for Cancer, I proposed a model for this activity…then I presented a hypothesis as to where an ‘I’ particle would fit in….If an ‘I’ particle is in charge of the activity in a cell…if it identifies many of the particles and molecules moving about in the cell…and then ‘thinks’ and decides where they need to be sent, what additional molecules need to be made with the help of DNA…then this ‘I’ would be a position to identify particles and molecules which are related to the first phases of cancer…when such particles or molecules are identified…scientists can equip the ‘I’ with DNA to identify these early cancerous intrusions…and take action aganst them…or immediately cause the death of the cell…In this way, cancer could be stopped right at its inception…

As I say, there are several different disciplines and areas of thought that point to the possibility that all of this is true…it appears that the piling on of possibilities that this is true has increased the probability of its being true to about 60 or 70 percent…

Now if we go back further in the evolution of the cell…way back to the emergence of life…if we can find a possibility…in fact a strong possibility that hydrogen ions were involved in the creation of life…then the probability that hydrogen ions may possess consciousness…no, beyond that…that all atoms possess consciousness…would increase even more….

The Origin of Life and an Earlier Hypothesis

The thing is, not too long ago scientists took gases that were thought to be in the atmosphere 4 billion years ago…along with water in the ocean, zapped the concoction with high levels of energy…they used electricity, which acted like a lightning bolt…and poof they got amino acids.! So it appeared that life was easy to make way 4 billion years ago…

The gases that were thought to be in the atmosphere 4 billion years ago…were CO2, CH4, NH3, and H2….it was thought that these gases would have been absorbed into the sea…In water, simple organic molecules, that is, molecules containing carbon were likely to have been produced under primal conditions…where there was a constant massive assault by cosmic rays…there was no ozone layer in the atmosphere to protect the earth at this point…so there would have been a potent brew of chemicals in the ocean assaulted by a constant exposure to high energy electromagnetic radiation from the heavens…this would have presented a scenario in which life could have emerged…Scientists took these ideas and performed experiments…

In 1953, chemists Harold Urey and Stanley Miller at the University of Chicago reproduced the early atmosphere of earth that was believed to have existed 4 billion years ago…they did this by taking a chamber and placing only hydrogen, water, methane, and ammonia inside it. They boiled the water and instead of exposing the mix to ultraviolet light, they used an electric discharge, to simulate lightning…After a week, they had a residue of compounds settled in their system…organic compounds had been formed! … most notably amino acids…they formed easily…That same year the structure of DNA was elucidated, revealing a way in which some compounds …nucleic acids…could replicate and keep life going…the base pairs within DNA are made of simple carbon based compounds with nitrogen and phosphorus thrown in….The components of DNA were later synthesized from these same gases that were thought to be present in the early atmosphere…

Many other scientists followed Urey and Miller’s lead…took those same chemicals that were thought to be in the primal atmosphere and created an array of chemicals essential to life that exists on earth today…Among these were HCHO (formaldehyde), HCOOH (formic acid), HCH (hydrogen cyanide)…these can readily undergo further reactions with H2O

.. to form CH3COOH (acetic acid), NH2CH2COOH (glycine), CH3CHCOOH (lactic acid) and NH2CHCOOH (alanine)

These molecules presented an array of tools from which building blocks of life can be made …

Most scientists believe that life began with the help of RNA because RNA was a molecule that could act like an enzyme, that is, it could powerfully help shape patterns of chemical activity…and it had the ‘code’ of life within it…it ‘knew’ what shape molecules should take to create life….Yes, RNA and in fact DNA that later developed were breathtaking advances in life giving molecules…Yet there are two problems with this hypothesis…first as an enzyme, RNA only has the capacity to accelerate patterns that already exist…one is left with the standard reliance upon a random occurrence of events to form those patterns in the first place… wherewith the probability of randomness creating anything is very slim…in the face of the second law of thermodynamics….which states that anything that possesses organization is destined to lose that organization inexorably, continually…unless forces of some sort are exerted to the contrary…

Which brings us to the second problem…RNA is a very complicated and sophisticated molecule, the evidence for which does not emerge until approximately 3 billion years ago….what happened during the billion years of life before that?

It has always amazed me the confidence scientists have had that the delineation of the RNA and DNA genomes of humans would provide the breakthroughs, the cure-alls we are desperately seeking for cancer, Alzheimer’s and other deadly diseases…Basically, DNA is a memory…and while RNA can accelerate patterns of activity as we have said…it too is basically a memory…knowing what is in the medicine cabinet of the cell is very helpful in combating disease…but it is like being lost in a desert with a memory but with no will or ability to do anything with that memory….If we do not know how cells operate…we simply cannot rely upon randomness to supply information about the past or help with cures of horrible diseases in the future…We must know more and we must know now…

A major problem is that proteins seem to be of fundamental importance to life…yet they did not appear until after life had been around for one billion years…Why are proteins so important to life? The first step in the action of a protein is its binding to another molecule. Proteins as a class of macromolecules are unique in being able to recognize [that is, perceive] and interact [that is, think, decide, then take action] with a highly diverse collection of molecules. Scientists at the present time do not believe that chemicals can possess or express ‘intentionality’, that is, Will…that they cannot perceive, think, or act…however, they believe that some proteins, especially enzymes, which can act as catalysts in biological processes…can somehow act as if they can perceive, think, and act. Examples of how enzymes facilitate and accelerate biological interactions are… Myoglobin tightly binds a heme group when its polypeptide chain is partly folded…The acquisition of heme enables myoglobin to carry out its biological function, which is to reversibly bind O2. Proteins also combine with other proteins to produce highly ordered arrays, such as the contractile filaments in muscle…Another example is the binding of foreign molecules to antibody proteins which enables the immune system to distinguish between self and nonself…The fact is…enzymes help things happen…but most important to all of this is…speed….enzymes can accelerate activity trillions of times… hydrogen ion gradients can sit around in a tide pool for a while and do a little this and that…but without tremendous speed…the next level of life…that of organisms…simply cannot exist!

The question is…Amino acids and proteins were necessary for enzymes to appear…enzymes that are necessary for speed…if proteins did not show up until fairly late in the game…how were the basic functions of life first performed and by what molecules?

Building a Model for the Emergence of Life

The problem is… scientists now know that 4 billion years ago the

Earth’s atmosphere was primarily CO2…there is no way that amino acids and then a parade of proteins and RNA and DNA could have emerged initially from conditions in an atmosphere such as this..and there is no evidence that such molecules existed at the beginning. Also, most organisms that exist today possessing photosynthetic properties utilize regular daylight or infrared light..so the hypothesis that high frequencies of energy like cosmic rays or ultraviolet light or even lightning bolts were required to inititate life…is probably wrong…We need to go back to square one…

We are attempting to build a model depicting how life first arose. The first question we need to address is…What exactly is life?…

Life is nothing more than chemical reactions occurring in a pattern and then this pattern is replicated again and again…The normal reaction to this is to say No!…life is more than this…but then we are confusing consciousness with life…isn’t a tree just chemicals parading in a pattern over and over again?…Well, yes..and no…somehow trees bend and seen to reach for the light…and animals go beyond that…Right…animals possess consciousness….that is more than a parade of chemicals…unless the chemicals have consciousness within them…this is the crux of the matter….

For now we are just looking at patterns…if we are looking for the origin of life…we are looking for a way that chemicals started a pattern and then replicated it…So how do we go about building a model for what might have happened 3.9 billion years ago? First, there must been a way for chemicals to be isolated in a space separate from the rest of the ocean but a part of it…Scientists believe that isolation by means of a cell wall was essential at this very first stage…I do not think a wall built by the entity in question is essential…chemicals can be isolated by many physical means in or on the edges of the ocean…in sands or in tide pools….

Second, in this isolated space there had to be molecules that were present routinely in the ocean at the time….

Then what happened? What was the first step…that started all of this…on the road towards Life?

Well, we have gone through this before…but it is worth repeating …About fifteen years ago I got this idea that we can learn more about consciousness if we go back in evolutionary history to when vegetable turned into animal…something was floating like leaf in the ocean and boom!..it began to move…away from what might eat it to what it might eat instead….this evidently happened quickly without much of an addition in DNA…something was added…and because everything in the universe is a particle, probably a particle or group of particles was added…at first I thought it might have been light…as it turns out that guess probably was not as bad as I then thought…we will return to this thought…the problem with light with a photon is that whatever was added must have been able to perceive, think and act…a photon doesn’t seem to be capable of all of that…an atom is more likely…as there are three quarks, each of which might serve a different series of duties…but an atom is a center of consciousness why haven’t we seen or heard more…probably because with electrons about it…it is ‘concealed’, cut off from the world about it…if electrons are stripped away…it would become an ion and it might be ‘revealed’…able to interact with other things….

As I say…we must stop being afraid of the word ‘intentionality’ when we talk about consciousness in the universe….sure it is weird to be saying that a rock has potential intentionality…potential Will…but we have accept the fact that the entire subject of consciousness is weird…everyone of us is ‘looking out’…we think we are the center of the universe…it appears that every animal ‘looks out” in the same way even if every animal is not equipped with a brain to recognize that fact….

Well, as we saw before… all of this led to the hypothesis that a hydrogen ion would be the most likely candidate to be an ‘I’…the seat of consciousness.. For hydrogen ions to have participated in the creation of life…three things would have to be true. In general..First, there would have to have been a bountiful supply of hydrogen ions around four billion years ago…as we have said, in an isolated, protected place where life could emerge…. Second…there would have to have been pathways over which, through which, by means of which chemicals could have been paraded by hydrogen ions to be perceived, for the ions to think about, and then for action to be taken to process these chemicals and create the first life….Then third, using these first simple chemicals that were on some sort of pathway to and from hydrogen ions, these specks of consciousness must have been able to have formed in an easy way molecules that could generate and store energy that would be required to produce and sustain life…and simultaneously be building structures leading to the formation of the first cells…To determine how these three things happened is a challenge as all of this occurred 4 billion years ago…still there is hope that there are vestiges of this early work among chemicals and patterns of chemical reactions in cells today…as they say in the field of geology…what is occurring today, has occurred in the past, and shall continue to occur in the future…The fact is…it seems that once certain patterns have appeared in the emergence of life…these patterns have tended to remain as they were, or have been altered slightly to create new patterns…in ways that the evolution of the cell can be discerned…

In more detail…First we must find that it was possible that hydrogen ions were in abundance in oceans 4 billon years ago…then we must consider what were the five major abilities and objectives hydrogen ions must have possessed and pursued to create life?

First…Shapes…they must been able to identify things…they may have done this by identifying structures….the three dimensional array of molecules is how chemicals are identified…which is called ‘conformation’…the relationship between the three-dimensional structure of molecules and their biological activity…for scientists shape of molecules seems to be very important in the identification and interaction among molecules.

Yet there is another possibility operating within the purview of identification and interaction of molecules…in the human brain, if a hydrogen ion is in charge…then information is paraded by it by means of ions moving in neurons…how would the ion receive information from these ions…well, ions flowing in neurons generate waves electrical and magnetic…it seems likely that the hydrogen ion is ‘reading’ the information directly from these waves…thus at the very beginning of life, hydrogen ions probably identified molecules about it in the same way…first in a hydrogen atom with electrons the nucleus communicates with its electrons in this wave oriented manner…then when electrons are removed, the ion is able to perceive, identify molecules about it in the same manner….via waves generated by all atomic activity….

Second…Energy…hydrogen ions must have been able to make things happen…To create, to have an impact on things, one needs energy…so when they were pushing things around…one had to have found, obtained energy and somehow stored it somewhere and then was able to grab it and use it when it was needed…that is, there must have been the capability of generation and storage of metabolic energy…

Third…Structure…as we have said…if hydrogen ions are to do something…they need a laboratory…a place where chemicals can be isolated from the surrounding world….structure is needed for particles and molecules to interact with hydrogen ions….structure is also required in order that things that are created can be preserved… progress can be made without loss of things that are built…As I have said…scientists think that a cell wall was one of the first things built…I think that all of this took place between grains of sand or in pocket of water in tide pools or somewhere…forget a cell wall for a moment…say we have an isolated space…one still needs structure…a cell is filled with filaments …particles and molecules are moved by force along lines, along highways from the outside world along paths inside the isolated space…where hydrogen ions can examine particles and molecules and identify them and make decisions…we can use that over there …we have too much of this…we need more of something else…so pathways were number one…these pathways would have made it possible for hydrogen ions to parade past…or have molecules parade past them…in this way the hydrogen ions could have worked with different molecules….

Eventually, amino acids were created for this purpose… created by hydrogen ions…these worked very well for this purpose…we need to know how they worked so we can see if there were counterparts in the very first early stages that performed the same functions…amino acids have one part of them that is the same…to which are attached a little this and a little that which gives them a shape which can be used to identify them and a shape that can be used to build things…by combining with other amino acids…and eventually amino acids were used to build proteins..and DNA and RNA were built to be memories…that is they were patterns, templates that could be used to assist in the building of these proteins…Were there any things that might have corresponded to all of this…at the very first earliest stage of life? That is, if amino acids did not exist at the very very beginning…there must have been something like them which performed similar functions…we must find these…

So to return to what hydrogen ions would have had to possess to do their work…

Fourth…memory…storage, transmission, and expression of genetic material…no..at this early stage there must have been a counterpart to what later developed into genetic memory…what might have worked would have been molecules built to last a while, placed in a sequence, which would have allowed hydrogen ions to pass by them or among them and complete tasks in a given order…Again what would have structures like this been built of in this very very early stage of life?

Fifth…a model for cognition would have had to have been made…along the lines of a tiny brain…at this very early stage of life….there must have been ways for particles and molecules to be perceived… particles and molecules entering an isolated area must have been moved somehow into the vicinity of the hydrogen ions where the hydrogen ions could identify, think, make decisions, and then have a memory that is a collection of building blocks at hand to make what is needed and a pathways to deliver what is made to where it is needed…this is molecular physiology…the interaction, conformation, and metabolism in physiological processes…these are fancy words for…perceive, think, and act…As we have said…very important to all of this would have been the building of structures that assisted hydrogen ions in performing things…and a means of acquiring the energy necessary to build and move these things…

So if consciousness was there when life was first formed…we should look for hydrogen ions…and we should look for chemicals that could have been formed easily from gases in the air that can be absorbed by the ocean and water in the ocean itself…chemicals that could easily be made into structures…structures that could aid the work of hydrogen ions…Well, it is a great help for a scientists to know what he or she is looking for…for decades answers may sit right before their eyes without progress because scientists are not asking the right questions… We know what we are looking for….

Here we are looking for interactions and reactions among particles and molecules that may have taken place very early in the creation of life and are ‘held over’ in later stages of the development of life….

Light Created Life!

So we know what we are looking for. First, we are looking for hydrogen ions. The early atmosphere was made up mostly of carbon dioxide, along with tiny amounts of methane, ammonia, nitrogen, and water vapor.. And of course, there was the ocean…there was water…lots of water…

So the first thing…as we say…4 billion years ago there was a plenitude of two things on earth….there was a lot of ocean and a lot of atmosphere…the former of course was composed mostly of H20…and the latter was composed mainly of CO2…It just so happens when these water and air are combined we reaped the following…

H2O + CO2 yields HCO3- + H+

We see this reaction everyday nowadays…this reaction is initiated, accelerated, and proliferated millions maybe trillions of times by the action of enzymes in our bodies every day to acquire hydrogen ions necessary for performing important functions in our bodies…Of course this reaction occurred at a much slower pace at the beginning of life….It is what we have been looking for…a gas in the air plus water yields a potent source for a surfeit of hydrogen ions.

Then there is a second thing…once hydrogen ions are generated in water, of course there is a propensity for these ions to immediately combine with other hydrogen ions and create hydrogen gas…However, H2 when it is produced in water is never stabilized…it readily dissociates into an electron plus a proton (that is, e– + H+). In this way hydrogen gas alternated with hydrogen ions in a perpetual vacillation back and forth…a pattern replicated over and over…this was the earliest form of chemical replication…this was the earliest form of life!…Hydrogen ions vacillating back and forth between H2 and H+ plus an electron…would have formed gradients with concentrations of H+ appearing in isolated contained areas….as I say, this flashing back and forth from H2 to H+ would have been a rudimentary sort of life…a pattern replicated…with consciousness embedded within it!

However, for replication to take place in a more predictable manner… structures had to be formed to help guide this flow of chemical reactions….It appears that the first structures that hydrogen ions created to assist in this replication were….sugars…

We saw that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere plus water gives us a wealth of hydrogen ions….Well, carbon dioxide plus water…plus light… gives us…sugar!

From the same folks that gave us hydrogen ions, with the help of light gave us sugars…sugars give us building blocks to aid replication of chemical reactions… plus sugars can store and move energy from one place to another …there is a problem with the breakdown of sugars to obtain energy as glycolysis takes a great amount of time without enzymes…thus there would have been great pressure for hydrogen ions to create amino acids and proteins to create enzymes…that is, catalysts that could accelerate biological interactions and reactions many many times…thus there was a need for nitrogen and phosphorous…to form enzymes…or rudimentary nucleotides could have been made…because RNA can act as an enzyme…

Perhaps one recognizes this pattern…this creation of structures and movement of energy…why, it is the essence of a process rife on our planet filled with life today…it is photosynthesis….yes, it appears photosynthesis was there at the very beginning of creation of life…Yes, light indeed… did help create life!

Sugars! The reason that molecules are ‘organic’ is that they have carbon as an important part of their composition…often part of their backbones… Carbon is ionic and can easily break apart and combine again… often in long chains…called ‘polymers’…polymers are the secret to life…molecules can build to immense size then collapse quickly…chains of reactions can occur quite quickly and easily….

So… the ocean was filled with H+ 3 billion years ago…which is what we were looking for….In addition, photosynthesis seems to have been there at the very beginning,…Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms…some organisms have processes which seem to be closer to what was happening at the very beginning…photosynthesis is used to convert light energy into chemical energy…By light is meant any frequency of radiation from infrared to ultraviolet…most photosynthesis on earth is now performed with the assistance of light that we can see …however, some organisms use infrared radiation..half of the radiation that hits the earth is infrared light…so it is reasonable to think that the first life used infrared light….this chemical energy was stored in the sugar molecules that photosynthesis created, then transported to other areas to be released later to perpetuate replication at first…later to feed an organisms’ activities…As we have said…at this very very very early stage…breaking sugars down to obtain energy would have taken long periods of time…prompting the initiation of action for hydrogen ions to really change things..obtaining nitrogen and phosphorous to build amino acids, proteins, and ultimately enzymes to move the energy process faster…..

All of this means that life had to have first occurred near air in the ocean where water and CO2 could combine to produce hydrogen ions and sugars…however, since the breaking down of sugars was necessary to obtain energy to accomplish things…it is possible that once life was begun it may have moved to the bottom of the sea near vents that exuded gases from the center of the earth… nitrogen and phosphorus could be obtained…

Our model then, simply…is…hydrogen ions arising naturally from a reaction between water and carbon dioxide…followed by a process called carbon fixation which produced a three-carbon sugar product…which in turn provided structures and means to move energy…obtaining energy from sugar molecules was a slow process…which led to the push to create molecules like amino acids which could be used to build proteins that could speed processes and eventually replace the rudimentary structures made of sugar with stronger longer lasting structrues made of proteins.

How Do We Get to Amino Acids?

So we have seen that the push was on to create molecules that could speed the generation of energy…how was this done?…Scientists generally agree that the first life on earth appeared sometime before 3.9 billion years ago…The origins of life are known to have come after the presence of liquid water on earth… Once large pools of water had formed…it was possible for life to exist. Cynobacteria, some of the earliest types of procaryotic bacteria… have left remains, which have been found in Australia dated back to between 3.4 to 2.8 billion years ago…Ancient as their origins are…these bacteria were already biologically complex, with cell walls protecting their protein-producing DNA…This was one billion years after life first emerged.

So what happened during these one billion years?

Well, we know that hydrogen ions were present at the emergence of life… and they were working with sugars right away in a photosynthesis sort of way…

A stream of hydrogen ions was not a stream of entities operating all alone…there was a lot of interaction in two respects…First, a stream of hydrogen ions possessed consciousness…flashing back and forth from being ‘revealed’ and active in the world around them…to being ‘concealed’ as hydrogen gas…these ions were able to communicate with each other…process the building of structures, working one after the other in a coordinated manner…when a hydrogen molecule was H+ + e- …that is, plus an electron… it possessed a wave which could move information along a line of ions….patterns could ve created and then replicated…After a time, other hydrogen gradients emerged which could compete with the original ones…they could try new things and evolution would reward operations which worked the best…

It is possible that the famous ‘will to survive’ that all life seems to exhibit from the most minute of bacteria to the largest of beasts…may have begun in the hydrogen ion gradient….perhaps when a nucleus is ‘revealed’…the experience is exhilarating and an ion is reluctant to lose this stance toward the world…even when one ion is in command, the other ions in a gradient may take pride in participating in their roles in perpetuating life…In the end, when all ions become part of complete atoms again…these nuclei settle in a peaceful, blissful existence that was never to be feared or deprecated…until the opportunity arises again for the ‘I’ to exhibit its awesome ability for impact….

But how do we get from sugars to proteins…well, it took a billion or so years…so it wasn’t like the transition took place right away…

Well, we cannot fill all the gaps…but we do know a few things…For example, once organizational tools were built out of sugar…they were elaborated and made stronger, better, more efficient…DNA and RNA which appeared later are constructed and elaborated in a way that mimics how sugars elongate and elaborate themselves…The addition of nitrogen and phosphorous to the recipe for building structures made of sugars was crucial…they have given biological structures resilience, durability, and speed in replication….they have allowed life to spread like a blanket around, across the planet so that every square millimeter is inundated with trillions of organisms…and filled the atmosphere with oxygen… So is there any evidence that nitrogen and phosphorous were available in large quantities during the one billion year period when the evolution from hydrogen ions and sugars to proteins occurred?

First of all…in life today nitrogen and phosphorous are still difficult for life to grab ahold of…for this reason in every sequence of reactions in which these elements are utilized…they are recycled back to be used again…some life gains energy and structures from light…but most life devours other life…

thereby acquiring these crucial elements…Even within an organism, proteins are constantly falling apart, yet amino acids tend to remain in tack…they are also kept within the confines of the organism available for further use when new proteins are assembled…this preserves these crucial elements also…

Second, in addition to the recycling of these elements…additional supplies of them is required from time to time for life to survive…Were nitrogen and phosphorous available in the oceans when life moved from a sugar based existence to one with amino acids and proteins?…

As far as nitrogen is concerned…scientists have found well-preserved rocks that have been associated with early evidence for oxygenic photosynthesis 2.7 years ago…the rock samples showed the first direct evidence of the build up of a large pool of ammonium in and around the time that life was utilizing it in creating proteins…this ammonium would have provided an ample source of nitrogen to fuel the early biosphere…

The availability of phosphorous has not been documented as of this date. .It is the one piece of the puzzle still missing.

In this way, our research hypothesizes that the parade allowing the emergence of life proceeded as follows….H+ gradients flashing back and forth from H2 to H+ plus an electron was the first life…such concentrations of H+ is rife in life today to the extent that they are a major signature of life….These gradients utilized sugars for structures and energy…which eventually led to the creation of amino acids, then proteins, then nucleotides…which allowed the production of eucaryotic cells and ultimately, multicellular life.

The I and Tools

One thing we learn from archaeologists…the same thing that we have learned from pragmatists and a psychologist like William James…the hallmark of consciousness is the appearance of tools….good ideas are the ones that work…that is, the best ideas are tools…Humans with their great minds are able to innovate and create tools fashioned from the natural world around them…and create things that have never been seen before…However, we must not forget that things like instinct and parts of animal bodies…actually parts of anything that we deem to attach the appellation of ‘life’…all of these things are tools…relics from the past…evidence of consciousness constructing things that ‘work’…building things all the way from the atomic to the macro level that can impact, move the world around it…the world that surrounds such a miracle of creative ability….

Randomness creates nothing…as is stated by the second law of thermodynamics…Systems which display an organization can only degrade…never build back up by themselves…It may be a rule universal in nature…that wherever, whenever organization is seen…consciousness at some level of Cosmic power has been at work….this does not mean that there is an old man with a beard, a kindly father sweetly at work watching oer our world and our cosmos….No, in fact it would be the Cosmos, itself…with a capital C indicating consciousness of the grandest inclusive, space commanding sort…that is building itself…every day…

All is spreading outwards…outwards…always…towards dissipation, disorganization, and death of intention….

No!…I would never bet in favor of such an ultimate dissolution of things…Where there is will there is a way….Where there is Will…there are tools….there is hope….there is Law…there is Love….there is Cosmos…there is Consciousness…with a capital C……

Conclusion

As I say…we must stop being afraid of the word ‘intentionality’ when we talk about phenomena in the universe….sure, it is weird to be saying that a rock has potential intentionality…potential Will…but we have to accept the fact that the entire subject of consciousness is weird…everyone of us is ‘looking out’…We each think we are the center of the universe…it appears that every animal ‘looks out” in the same way even if every animal is not equipped with a brain to recognize that fact….The fact is… every cell in our body…every microorganism seems to have consciousness operating at the atomic level within it….

For example, as we have said…one question is…how did life graduate from H+ and sugars to amino acids and proteins? Well, as we have said…concentrations of hydrogen ions were the first life…they were conscious, able to work together to construct tools…once organizational tools were built…they were elaborated made stronger, better, more efficient…As we have said…DNA and RNA are constructed and elaborated in a way that mimics how sugars elongate and elaborate themselves…The addition of nitrogen and phosphorous to the recipe for building structures made of sugars…has given life resilience, durability, and speed in replication….has allowed life to spread across the planet so that every square millimeter is inundated with trillions of organisms…..The five second rule…rubbish…There is an entire world that exists near the atomic level…there is a minute dust that covers the planet and embedded within that dust is life…bacteria, microbes far below the visibility of the eye…once something touches that dust, bacteria is transferred….just one piece of evidence of the pervasiveness, durability, intransigence, the power of Life….

Humans may have the power to pollute their world… perhaps even annihilate themselves…but most life lives beneath the radar…a world of life that is stealthy…as far as our perception is concerned…Sure, ants and cockroaches may still live after a nuclear holocaust…but the truth is…Life has always really existed in full bloom, in extravagance at, near the atom level…near the molecular level….and every star is filled with hydrogen ions…that flash to and from one great I to the many…this is a replication that is eternal…this is a replication that is always…the sure sign… of tools….the sure sign…of consciousness at work…

In our introduction, we said that several disciplines and areas of thought when brought together increase the probability that the hypothesis that every atom possesses consciousness is true. Now we can add one more area of thought…the emergence of Life…this increases the probability that our hypothesis is true to about 85 percent….As we have said, there is the possibility of empirical verification of the existence of the ‘I’ particle…from experiments at CERN utilizing the Large Hadron Collider….if what we are looking for is not demolished in the process….People say the world is not ready for such speculations as are provided here….We say we must fight cancer now….in a most powerful way …we cannot wait another thousand years until scientists are able to put theological concerns aside and finally confront a Cosmos where the most amazing things are true…There are miracles occurring everyday…as every person is able to ‘look out’…There is room for more miracles…if we allow them to be…in our science….

There is one last thing…scientists feel they are close to understanding not only what atom nuclei are composed of…but how these constituent parts operate…how these parts work together… As I have said, atom smashers… smash atoms to smithereens…most of the knowledge we seek is obliterated…there are other more clever ways we are developing that we hope will reveal more about this tiny tiny but most important world…as the entire Cosmos was is composed originally at this level….the most important operations work at this level…But wait…now there may be another way to assist in this investigation of this invisible world…Each of us possesses an ‘I’…and this ‘I’ is ‘looking out’ from the center…of an atom…Might we not merely ‘look out’…This would be a most clever form of investigation…What do we see…do we see ‘strings’… multiverses? …quarks…or do we just see…energy?…perhaps the basis of everything is…as it was in the beginning…entirely composed of energy….encapsulated, parceled out, given different responsibilities and powers…but just energy…and we can see that…we can see everything we seek…by merely…’looking out’…examining the nuclei of atoms…from the inside…out….

So if consciousness was there when life was first formed…we should look for hydrogen ions…and we should look for chemicals that can be formed easily from gases in the air that can be absorbed by the ocean and water in the ocean itself…well, it is a great help for a scientists to know what he or she is looking for…for decades answers may sit right before their eyes without progress because scientists are not asking the right questions…we know what we are looking for….

I San Francisco Overture

Well, it all started when I was four…I started taking piano lessons with my aunt…and I started singing in a church choir the same year….at one point, my piano teacher wanted me to be a professional concert pianist and my voice teacher wanted me to be in opera….well, each of these takes 12 hours of practice a day…I decided that I wouldn’t spend my life doing either…. and this is just talking about music…there has been a lot more to my life than just music…They say that art and science don’t mix…it is either one or the other…a person is either one or the other…I am writing here to say and prove that this is malarky….Thought is of one whole cloth….A person needs all of it to be a complete person….Thought needs all of it for the greatest progress to be made. And as a bipolar sort of person…in a good, healthy sort of way…this was just the reflective side of me…There was also boy scouts and 4-H…I was also a leader…My life was sort of like both of my German grandfathers rolled into one…one a wildcatter who ended up an executive of the largest oil company in the world with only an eighth grade education…because he and his buddy had come up with over 100 inventions…100 inventions that are on every oil well today…and my other grandfather, a captain of industry, who ruled an empire that spread across the Los Angeles area….a businessman…a man of action…who was in Who’s Who in California and personally knew the ‘Big Boys’…Neither were able to go to high school….both had great abilities…but both worked with guys who had ‘other’ abilities…they realized that America is the land of all abilities…You can discriminate and hate those different from you…or you can appreciate differences…work with others and rule the world…impact the world…change the world …for the better… Thought and action…art and science…right and left sides of the brain… The world is either locked in separate prisons…Or it is allowed to flow…move act think sing love climb…together…. We have had a century of oil…money…material things…Now is a time for culture….But culture is not just an indulgence…Science has run into roadblocks in so many directions…When art and science, research and music, both sides of the brain…work together…they all run together…the disciplines run work together…There is power in several rivulets pouring into one coursing stream….In art, each master work deserves attention…yet the most powerful are those in which many art forces flow together…as in musical drama…that is, like in musicals…The six songs that are offered to you at this time…is a real musical……Because we have computers…because we have the Internet…we do not require the usual number of 18 songs that make live performance profitable…profit is no longer the goal…With the Internet we are moving into a new age…an age of thought, art, culture…Love….Materially, we have enough….The fact is…machines are taking our livelihoods away…we are left with those activities that only humans can perform…Thought….The New…The Powerful…The Power of the human Mind… Yes, the 20th century saw both the good and bad sides of all of this…I mean, we really are scarred with warning…from war that has been too horrible to talk about…It is time for us to hold hands with one another…and offer our abilities to the Good, the Beautiful, the Power to Act… to Transform…I mean, the Cosmos is exploding in magnificent, unconscionable splender…yet there is little that is new…The new is left for us…left for humans to do…if only we can put differences aside…and climb the Mountain…Together….

II One Pool of Light

Well, when I was six…my piano teacher showed me how to play ‘Mary had a Little Lamb’…he wrote out the melody and over each part of the song he wrote the chords that went with the melody….He said that that was the secret to music…there was melody and there were chords…once you understood that..you could play anything more easily…you could even compose…Well, I was six and I composed my first piece…and my teacher was so proud of me…but I knew better…I had just copied stuff I was playing…I swore right then that I would not compose again until I could compose stuff that was really mine…so the next time I composed was in college, when I was given a Beatles’s song book by my fraternity brothers…there were two songs that caught my attention…they were not my favorite songs…in fact in a way they were quite ugly…yet they were ugly because they dared to move into harmonics that were never permissible… they took me to a new land…’I want to be your lover baby, I want to be your man’…and ‘I saw her standing there’…both of these songs were in the key of C…so they should have made me play only white keys on the piano…but there was a shock…there was a black note…there was a B flat…a C chord then a G minor chord…and this was not the Blues, this was not jazz…this was regular popular music..this was rock and roll!…. Immediately I took that B flat note seriously…I played a C triad and then a B flat triad…and somehow before I even thought about what I was doing… I overlapped a C triad with a B flat triad and miracles happened…I knew from the Blues that if you had a B flat note, then you could have an E flat note and then an A flat note and the rest of the black notes could follow from there…if you played them in the proper order…this meant that I could play the E flat triad and the A flat triads also…until I played all the triads in the octave….so all of a sudden I thought of myself playing in the key of C with a lot of extra notes and triads thrown in…I was really playing 12 tone scale music…but I didn’t really have any theory…I was just messing around…. Then I ran into Fats Waller…in some of his songs, he was playing an F triad in his left hand…and then simultaneously he would play all the triads in the octave…all twelve of them…just as I was teaching myself to do…in the same order that I found worked…in the right hand…Yes, he had discovered what I had discovered a long time before I discovered it…and we all think we are doing something new…but I looked carefully…his left hand did not move…the right hand played 12 different triads one after the other ….the left hand did not move…what did this mean?…I saw right then and there what he was doing… his recording company made him break up the triads into broken chords…playing one note at a time…so it would sound more like jazz…so it was just some crazy black music or something…but I saw what he was doing…Instead of playing the triads broken up…I played all the notes at once and his triads were the same as mine…plus…he was overlapping triads (emphasis)…yes I saw right then and there that one could play more than one triad at the same time…well, later on I saw that this was what Debussy and Ravel…had done…staying in one traditional key…that is, all white notes no black ones…just overlapping the normal triads in a scale….but Waller was overlapping triads that weren’t in the scale…then it occurred to me..that I could overlap three deep, four deep, even five deep, if one note could stand for a triad…then I could play many many chords…every time the melody changed notes there was a new chord, this made music really interesting…7 tone scale music had become soooo boring…now I was writing music that was mine…and it all was really interesting and exciting….

II The Journey

Well, the 20^th century was supposed to be the century of 12 tone scale…music-wise… but we didn’t get very far…Debussy and Ravel tried to diverge from traditional 7 tone scale first…then came things that sounded less and less like music..and more like noise…there was Richard Strauss, then Schoenberg, then Stravinsky…then about 100 other people…each trying something different…

Well, I started with the Beatles, then Fats Waller and by the time the 1990s came around, I thought that my music was pretty revolutionary…

the reality is…those hundred composers had tried just about everything including what I had found…the problem is we all had one thing in common..we all were starting from scratch…I was just taking 7 tone scales and adding notes and triads if they sounded okay…other people just started with a scale of 12 notes and played them in sequence note after note…no chords at all..they called them a ‘row’ without repeating…until something sounded okay…I said, ‘okay’, but to me these people were more painters than composers…Haydn taught us that one must use his or her ear…step by step…music is for ears…not eyes…so as I say these people really didn’t have chords, just like the Middle Ages they had ‘melodies’ one note at a time and they would play more than one melody at once…of course, these sequences of notes did not sound like real melodies…they were ugly, raucous, strident, stressful, sounds the ear does not appreciate….as I say…in some ways these sounds had form and had more in common with painting than with music….

What was missing was a theory…Joseph Haydn was the first to develop a musical theory…he developed 7 tone scale theory…No one seems to know this..but I just looked at his first ten symphonies…He was a scientist…first he took one note at a time…if you just play the white notes on the piano…that is, just play in the key of C…where do you start, where do you stop…which notes can be played one after the other successfully…as far as your ear is concerned?…This last is the admonishment he was obviously most adamant about…If something sounds good…it is good…If it sounds bad…it is indeed bad…So Haydn that you should start on the note C and you could end on either C or G…As far as which notes could be played one after the other… you could play any notes in any order and it was legally fine…I personally would learn later on from Tchaikovsky that there was more to melody than that…when one is composing at the piano, one never thinks to hum…every time I hum, there is a new melody…a melody that a person’s ear likes to hear…it is like the male bird singing to his mate…he innately knows somehow what she is longing to hear…somehow the right side of the brain has inherited all of this….

Then how about two notes at a time…in an interval called a ‘third’…In the key of C…a C note and an E note played simultaneously is what is called a ‘major third’…this would seem to be close to performing the same thing as playing one note…but no!…this third it turns out… is a completely different dimension…a third in terms of overtones and harmonics is really stating a triad…and a triad is as different from one note as hardware is from software in computer science…without fully realizing what he was doing, Haydn started to let these thirds linger in some instruments in the orchestra over measures while other instruments doddled over single notes at a time… Mozart would crystallize this into music form…when he put triads in the left hand while playing the piano, and put melodies in the right…

Again Haydn, the scientist, found that you should start with a C triad and end with either a C triad or G triad…and you can play triads in any order… except…and this is a big exception…except for the seven triad…B diminished…it must always move to the tonic…the C triad….

Well, all of this seems really simple…yet it is theory…and Mozart and Beethoven took this theory and wrote some of the best music ever composed ….I decided that I would continue where Haydn left off…He found that the seven chord, the ‘diminished’ one, could be made more powerful by adding one more third above that…which was a black note!…see, he was in 12 tone scale right there and did not know it…that chord was so powerful that he found he could use it move to other keys…many other keys…

So I started right there…and utilizing his basic rules…moved into a complete 12-tone theory…this musical is my presentation of a theory that is all mine…I know of no other person who has ever utilized it…That wonderful piano teacher when I was six…gave me so much…One thing he gave me was the circle of fifths…it is a circle with the key of C at the top..and then you move to the left..to F, to Bflat, to Eflat, to Aflat, Dflat, and finally Gflat…see you have moved down the piano keyboard five notes at a time which takes you to different keys…and these keys are related in a magical way…each key increases with one flat every step…until at G flat you have six flats..at this point you have reached the bottom of the circle….Well, the next step…you move to the right of C…five notes at a time…to G, to D, to A, E, B and finally to Fsharp..which on the piano, with its tempered scale is the same as G flat…the movements right and left…meet at the bottom…As you moved to the right each key increased by one sharp…It is a Cosmos of music theory…all keys are related..it is a powerful thinking tool…but it seemed to have little use for anyone at the time that he gave it to me…it just made you feel good about things…in control of the things…

Well, in the 1990s, I made a decision, I was going to devise a theory… yes, I was going to continue what Haydn had started quite unintentionally a long time ago…I was building on what he had discovered…I was not starting from scratch…and the circle of fifths was going to be an important part of this…well, each of my songs were like Mozart, like the Beatles…they were in sonata form…where you have three themes, each in a different key… ABABCABCAB….like that…so I decided to devote one third of the circle of fifths to each theme…so I would be using four different keys at a time, one main chord with chords added from the keys around the main key…chords from the keys surrounding the main key on the circle of fifths…Well, to make a long story short…this musical has come a long way, baby, from that…when I worked on this musical, there were ten breakthroughs while I was working on the musical!…utilizing the circle of fifths…In one phrase of music, for example, all through the musical…I am whirling completely around the entire circle…I am in all the keys at once!…so take that Stravinsky!…and this music is not strident or ugly…in each key I have one million chords to choose from using overlapping of triads…I can choose precisely the chord that reflects the energy, in the idea in each word in the lyrics I am using…and my theory reduces the number of chords I need to look at…offering me instantly the best options…I don’t have to consider one million chords at each step…

So this musical is not just another musical…it is classical music…it is 12 tone scale music…with a theory…but it is also popular music…just like the Beatles…

Well, science and imagination is never done…there are always new enchantments to discover…

IV A World Springs Forth

So the 20th century was supposed to be the century of the 12 tone scale… why do I say this?…Well, it is time for some history…boys and girls…of Radioland…(this dates me)…Well, the first world war was over…it was time for things more modern…The word ‘modern’ in this context is confusing…in literature there was Joyce’s Ulysses and Virginia Woolf’s Room of One’s Own.and The Waves..as well as T.S. Elliot….in painting, the impressionists, then the post impressionists…well, think of Matisse and Picasso…then van Goch…well, the horrid music of Strauss, Stravinsky and Schoenberg were supposed to be born of similar impulses..What in the heck was this all about? Okay…let’s make all of this history short, but sweet…When one says the word ‘modern’…what one is actually referring to…obviously…is industrial revolution…I mean…come on now…nothing represents more of a break from the Middle Ages…I mean, mediaeval in all of its dark, sordid, disgusting aspects…than the revolution that lifted man and woman from the gutter to the realm of angels…well, humans became powerful…not slaves any longer… as was proclaimed by Napoleon and Beethoven… Well, industrial revolution occurred in England…1760-1790… approximately…So not so surprisingly, the nineteenth century was the first ‘modern’ century…I mean, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and all of the classical music composed during that span of time…were all modern impulses…the result of the waves of economic power that spread rapidly throughout Western civilization… So what was all this new 20th century ‘modern’ stuff…well, I maintain…spoiler alert…I am herewith jumping to the conclusion part of this letter in an attempt to help organize all of this…it is my thesis that all attempts to develop something new during the 20th century was not so much an attempt to develop a culture that was more closely aligned with the modernity created by economic transformation…as it was a new yearning for something more than what the ravages that material consumption and its absorption can wreak upon the earth…The search for modernism, post-modernism, and postpost-modernism, I maintain…was really a search for a future…to quickly move beyond what mere materialism can deliver…. Modernity in culture that was the result of waves of economic betterment…the modern culture of the 19th century…had been discredited partly because it had been grabbed by reactionary forces…primarily the aristocracy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was adamant about avoiding the excesses of this new industrial frenzy that was disrupting its entrenched medieval ways…and so almost all the opera, ballet, symphonic and chamber music was sponsored and paid for by elites in this Empire and in Russia who asserted that materialism obliterates culture…only the aristocracy had the virtue of knowing what was truly great and wonderful…and was devoted to perpetuating it…saying this while millions of serfs were in misery, dying daily…in this way, ironically, much of the modernity in culture that occurred during the 19th century was indeed in response to economic revolution…except it was conducted by reactionary forces… A second aspect to this was an European squabble..during the 19th century, Germany was on top of the intellectual ladder with great syntheses in geology, history, and philosophy…Darwin, tho English, was part of this time of great hypotheses and towering intellectual thought…well, world war popped the economic bubble of optimism that had offered up what had seemed to be a transcendent future for all of mankind…it also popped the bubble of great world embracing syntheses….somehow, however grand a thesis might be…a Hitler or Stalin seemed to be lurking in the corners of it…. So economically the 20th century was a century of cheap oil, and the logic of mass consumption was allowed to play out until cheap oil was completely gone by the century’s end..also the reaction to this excessive materialism and to the unspeakable horrors of the wars that sprang from it…spread across the same expanse of time… So now we are here…. An Age of Culture and Creativity Humbly…humanity…is attempting to build…a future…a future without inexpensive energy…in the 1950s and 1960s, gasoline in American had been almost as cheap as water…which had led to cars and the alienation and the television and cinema culture of the suburbs…Can humans come up with a future that is better than this? It also must be a future that can accommodate another almost unspeakable idea…As a result of the delineation of the human genome…it must be a future that will somehow accept the fact that man and woman…are indeed…an exotic type of chimpanzee… Well, machines can replace most of what human can impart to the earth…our only hope is to concentrate upon those bits of our physiology that rise above the ingenuity, cleverness of other animals….we are the tool bearing animal…because we are able to create the new…Creativity must be our hope, our salvation….out Future….Machines themselves…have consumed what man and woman have wrought economically…can we find any work to do at all?…We are left with ourselves again…and fortunately for us…that spark of Mind…can be the most mighty of Forces…

V Joy and Happiness

Well, this musical is music…and art and science are supposed to be completely different things…As I say…it is believed that if one is an artist there is no way he or she can be a scientist in any way…Well, this musical stands as evidence that such thinking is not true…First, as I have laid out…my development of 12 tone music was conducted in a scientific way after some breakthroughs in the 1990s…utilizing the basic approach, which was a scientific sort of approach… that Haydn developed…So from the get go…modern music was founded with the help of science… Then too there is the fact that this musical has lyrics….yes, I know…I am not the greatest lyricist in the world…but the fact is..in this case, the lyrics are the fruit of science…from my 55 years of research…the ideas in the lyrics come from a compilation of many of my ideas that are found in my science fiction adventure, Omicron Blue….In this book, the ideas that I had come up with in my philosophical exercise…Man and the Cosmos…The Science of Everything….were made concrete…drawn out in five dimensions…hee, hee, I am alluding here to ideas in my books…economic revolution is taken to its logical end…automation follows a logical path to complete mechanization of cities with only a handful of people in charge…the rest of humanity is now free…to return to the land…to live in a Nature with which our bodies are most consistent with… I mean, evolution of our bodies stopped when a great many humans could live to the age of reproduction…our bodies stopped evolving and our tools evolved instead…Well, there is nothing automatic about the evolution of tools…tools must be developed, created…man and woman must be vigilant, attentive, and energetic to keep the cavalcade of tools progressing… nevertheless, this explosion of tools has continued until now humans have become enmeshed in their tools…this age has given us refrigerators and washing machines…however, we have been condemned to live in a world of glass and steel…condemned to live for two centuries experiencing the psychological agony and loss of potential creativity in a desert of commuter suburban life… It is time for us to return to the land…to the Bay..that we scarcely have had time to enjoy in our frenetic lives…the land, where we might utilize those abilities that only humans possess…abilities that machines shall never acquire…regardless of the wondrous things that I-phones can do….It is time to recognize that there are two sides of the brain…the analytical Einstein side and the inductive, synthesizing Hegel side…when we put the sides of the brain together…we add I.Q.’s…explosions like the industrial revolution happen…the Beatles…happen… Yes we must continue here what the so called ‘modernists’ began during and after too much war….There must be a better way…There must be a way… to build a future..in which humans can safely…and happily…live…

VI San Francisco Finale So here we are..back where we started…yet is not the music in this sixth song now… in a way really quite new…I mean, we have come so far in such a short time…now the words and music have become something else…each word, each note, each chord…carries a load of thought and history with it…. Such is the power of musical drama…which includes all the arts..and thus wears the crown…over all…. So what I am saying is…that musicals must be merely a device utilized for propaganda purposes…this reminds us of Hitler all over again… No…human thought creates the new…the new are tools which we may use to impact a world…hopefully our tools become better, more powerful over time…power is not merely economic or political might…the explosions of the Cosmos may merely the concatenations of Cosmic thought of some sort…our thought may actually be allied to this Cosmic exercise, in some way…My thesis is…all art is really communication of ideas…thought and art are always combined…a Picasso painting presents what LSD teaches us…not me but the royal ‘we’ in general…that perception has already screened much of the reality about us…out…we think we see, understand everything…but Picasso shows that the eye has already made form…created a form … empowered by the left side of the brain…that does not actually exist in Nature…except in a way that is entwined with the laws of mathematics and thus with the Laws of the Cosmos…Wagner shows more about the right side of the brain than it communicates a history of a people..again flesh is made of atoms and thus is made consistent with the fabric of the Universe…so the right side of the brain reflects Cosmic Truth also… Yes, I know…all this San Francisco stuff is a bit chauvinistic and combative…but the lance has been thrown down…Come on…Show us what you have to give the world…Look up from your phones, your cars, your cable …reserve a part of your day to yourself…yet for the world…You can do great stuff too..especially now with the Internet to empower us…We have seen the best a material world can give us…We have also seen the worst…It is time for us to move on…move up…to the Cosmic…Creative world …of the Future. It’s a Brand…New…Day!!!!!
