Introduction<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In our last minibook , we became acquainted with the basic ideas in quantum mechanics. One of the references we consulted was a volume of Richard Feynman’s famous lectures which he gave at Cal Tech around 1960<\/p>\n\n\n\n
(see photograph on our website). We naturally assumed that lectures devoted to linear algebra, group theory, and matrix analysis would result in a text in which quantum mechanics would take an honored place. On further investigation, there was a shock for all of us – as the lectures were part of the regular undergraduate physics courses! This means that introductory courses in physics include mathematics that mathematics majors themselves – do not encounter until the graduate level! This naturally led to questions: Why? What gives?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It turns out that quantum mechanics has led to a total shakening of the discipline of physics. Quantum mechanics has led to questions that, it turns out, cannot be answered with the mathematics that have been utilized customarily in the past. The calculus that Sir Isaac Newton helped to create has been sufficient for working out ideas of classical physics in the past. And it appears that it is entirely sufficient for this at the present time. However, for some reason more powerful tools – than even a mathematics major seldom meets to the extent that we see in these lectures – until graduate level studies \u2013 this level of erudition and difficulty in physics has been extended into the first courses of physics. We might remind you that these introductory courses we are refering to – are ones that students in general might take for social broadening, and all engineering students must take as part of their curriculum. We suppose that the rationale for this is: Well, quantum mechanics has raised physics to such a realm of deductive sophistication – that it warrants exposure of all students to the wonders of these analytical geniuses. Perhaps this would encourage all of the disciplines in the curriculum \u2013 to rise to this level of deductive analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The problems are these: Quantum mechanics contrary to all assertions that professors in the field have made – is dead \u2013 in the water. Physics has not made substantial progess for over one hundred years. Physicists have found themselves devoting all of their time working in abstract castles of thought far removed from a world in which humanity will soon be struggling for survival. We need new sources of energy. The earth is running out of the resuources that have made Industrial Revolution possible. Humans have polluted and defamed a precious, delicate blue ball \u2013 floating in black space \u2013 our only home \u2013 and things must change \u2013 for the better \u2013 right here \u2013 right now! And we find that physicists have been sitting in ivory towers playing with mathematics as if they are parts of video games \u2013 which has resulted only in wild inconsequential speculations concerning esoteric string theories and multiverses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
